About

Name in Japanese and English

  • 日光二荒山神社 弥生祭
  • Yayoi Matsuri of Nikkō, the grand spring festival of Futarasan-jinja

History

The Yayoi Matsuri(弥生祭, Yayoi-sai)is the annual festival (例祭) of the Nikkō Futarasan-jinja shrine(日光二荒山神社, Nikkō Futarasan-jinja)in Nikkō(日光, Nikkō), Tochigi Prefecture(栃木県, Tochigi-ken). It is generally linked to an ancient tradition, often dated around the end of the 8th century, and it accompanies the return of spring in the district of “shrines and temples of Nikkō”(日光の社寺, Nikkō no shaji).

Its name comes from the fact that it was formerly held in the 3rd month of the lunar calendar(旧暦3月, kyūreki sangatsu), called Yayoi(弥生, Yayoi). With the transition to the solar calendar in the Meiji era(明治, Meiji), the period was fixed to April 13–17. The festival is also known by the nickname “Gota Matsuri”(ごた祭り, gota matsuri), because the respect for customs (しきたり) and protocol (格式) is very strict, and the slightest mistake can create tensions between districts.

One of the most visible markers of the Yayoi Matsuri is the parade of floats (屋台/山車), called here “ketai”(家体, yatai/ketai), decorated with artificial flowers (notably motifs of yashiotsutsuji(ヤシオツツジ, yashio tsutsuji)): these are called “hana-ketai”(花家体, hana yatai). They traditionally represent the East and West districts (東西, tōzai) of the city.

Location and Date of the Event

  • Location: Nikkō Futarasan-jinja Shrine (Honsya)(日光二荒山神社 本社, Nikkō Futarasan-jinja Honsya), Nikkō(栃木県日光市, Nikkō-shi).
  • Address: 〒321-1431 Tochigi Prefecture, Nikkō City, Sannai 2307
    2307 Sannai, Nikkō-shi, Tochigi 321-1431.
  • Date: April 13 to 17 every year (5 days), with the outings of hana-ketai(花家体, hana yatai)especially on 16 and 17.

Schedule

The Yayoi Matsuri takes place over 5 days, alternating between Shintō ceremonies(神事, shinji)and very photogenic street moments. Visitors come to pray for good fortune(招福, shōfuku)and enjoy the return of spring, while the districts organize around the floats(家体, ketai)and their teams.

Common landmarks (titles may vary slightly depending on the edition): April 13: opening with the mikoshi decoration ceremony(神輿飾祭, shinyokazari-sai)and associated rites. April 14–15: sequence of rites and ritual movements of mikoshi (e.g., around Takinoo-jinja(瀧尾神社, Takinoo-jinja)). April 16: the great eve of the festival(宵まつり, yoimatsuri)with gatherings, parade, then the well-known scene near Shinkyō(神橋, Shinkyō)with the bridge crossing rite(登橋神事, tōkyō shinji)and teuchi-shiki(手打ち式, teuchi-shiki).

April 17 is the climax: the main ceremony(例祭, reisai)at the shrine, arrival of the hana-ketai(花家体, hana yatai)inside the precinct, then the social highlight: the “meishi kōkan”(名刺交換, meishi kōkan), a ritual “exchange of cards” between district emissaries. Afterwards, the crowd often follows sequences like the shinmyō-mawari(神明廻り, shinmyō-mawari)and other greetings/codified formulas. Visually, the most impressive moment is often the entry/ascent of the floats into the shrine area, amid shouts and music.

Practical Tips

Photos

The best combo: April 16 (yoimatsuri) for scenes at Shinkyō(神橋, Shinkyō)and the illuminated floats on their return, then April 17 for the arrival of the hana-ketai(花家体, hana yatai)inside the precinct. To limit crowds in your frame, aim for early (before peak times) and position yourself on a curve of the route. A small zoom helps a lot (portraits of carriers, decoration details, expressions).

Weather

Mid-April in Nikkō is mid-season: often cool in the morning and milder in the afternoon, with a risk of showers. Bring a light warm layer + a windbreaker jacket, and comfortable shoes (lots of waiting, slow walking). A small poncho protects better than an umbrella in a dense crowd.

Transport

From the stations, the easiest is the bus to Taiyuin / Futarasan-jinja-mae(大猷院・二荒山神社前, Taiyuin / Futarasan-jinja-mae). On 16–17, expect slowdowns and traffic regulation zones around Route 119 (国道119号, kokudō hyakujūkyū-gō). If possible, schedule your return a bit later (after the major crowd movements).

Visitor Tips

Smart timing: arrive before midday on 17 to see the atmosphere build gradually, and quickly find a fixed spot instead of “chasing” the procession. On site, a “sumimasen”(すみません, sumimasen)and letting the float teams pass makes all the difference. If you want a more “ritual” experience, also offer a short prayer (参拝, sanpai) between float passages.

What to Bring

Cash, power bank, poncho, small towel, water bottle, layers (t-shirt + light fleece), and a bag to protect purchases and shrine items. On the evening of the 16th, add a warm layer (the temperature drops quickly).
