About

Name in Japanese and English

  • 鹿野まつり(城山神社祭礼)(しかの まつり/しろやまじんじゃ さいれい)
  • Shikano Matsuri, the Shikano Festival (Shiroyama Shrine)

History

The Shikano Matsuri(鹿野まつり, shikano matsuri)is the major spring festival of the castle town of Shikano(鹿野, shikano), organized around the Shiroyama Shrine(城山神社, shiroyama jinja). The town developed as a jōkamachi(城下町, jōkamachi, "castle town") under the local lords (notably the Kamei clan(亀井氏, kamei-shi)), which explains the very "warrior era" aesthetic of the parade.

Local documentation recalls that an old festival called Myōken-matsuri(妙見祭, myōken-matsuri)experienced interruptions, then was revived at the beginning of the 19th century in its current form, before being passed down to the present day. The festival is also designated as an intangible folk cultural property at the prefectural level (鳥取県無形民俗文化財, tottori-ken mukei minzoku bunkazai).

It is held every two years(隔年, kakunen)in April(4月, shigatsu): the rhythm is regular, but the exact date follows the targeted mid-April weekend.

Location & Date of the Event

Date: variable, mid-April weekend every two years (隔年4月中旬の土日, kakunen shigatsu chūjun no donichi).
Next edition: 2026(次回は2026年, jikai wa 2026-nen).

Location: Shiroyama Shrine(城山神社, shiroyama jinja)and Shikano Castle Ruins Park(鹿野城跡公園, shikano-jō ato kōen), around the historic center of Shikano(鳥取県鳥取市鹿野町鹿野, tottori-ken tottori-shi shikano-chō shikano).

Address (area): 〒689-0405 鳥取県鳥取市鹿野町鹿野

Event Schedule

The festival takes place in two parts: the eve, the Yoimatsuri(宵祭り, yoimatsuri, "evening festival"), then the next day, the Honmatsuri(本祭り, honmatsuri, "main festival").

Yoimatsuri(宵祭り, yoimatsuri): at dusk, a rite(神事, shinji)is held at the shrine, then the procession descends the hill: large lanterns(高張り提灯, takabari chōchin), sakaki(榊, sakaki, sacred branches), and mikoshi(神輿, mikoshi, portable shrine). The most spectacular moment is the lighting of the lanterns on ropes(綱灯篭, tsuna-dōrō), a long luminous garland that accompanies the descent and creates a very "castle town" atmosphere.

Honmatsuri(本祭り, honmatsuri): the day (and evening) is marked by a slow parade through the streets, with floats(屋台, yatai), musha gyōretsu(武者行列, musha gyōretsu, "warrior parade"), shishimai(獅子舞, shishimai, "lion dance")and shōjō(猩々, shōjō). Some groups also carry banners(幟差し, nobori-sashi)and local customs require not to cut their path.

For the atmosphere, keep in mind two images: the alleys of Shikano in procession(行列, gyōretsu)mode, then the contrast between the night festival (lanterns) and the grand parade the next day.

Practical Tips

  • Photos: at the Yoimatsuri(宵祭り, yoimatsuri), aim for the descent with the 綱灯篭tsuna-dōrō)and the 高張り提灯takabari chōchin). At the Honmatsuri(本祭り, honmatsuri), position yourself in a narrow street to capture the density of the procession (yatai + costumes).
  • Weather: mid-April can be mild, but evenings near the heights remain cool: bring a warm layer. In case of rain, the program may be adjusted, so be sure to check the latest announcement.
  • Transport: easy car access (from JR Tottori(JR鳥取駅, JR tottori-eki)or from 浜村鹿野温泉IChamamura shikano onsen IC)). By bus, get off at 鍛冶町kajimachi)then walk. Arrive early if you want to be close to the historic center.
