About

Name in Japanese and English

  • 山王まつり(日枝神社春季例大祭)
  • Sannō Matsuri of Toyama (Hie Shrine Grand Spring Festival)

History

The Sannō Matsuri of Toyama is the grand annual festival (例大祭, reitaisai) of Hie Shrine, affectionately known to locals as "Sannō-san." Held at the very start of summer, it is the shrine's most significant event and Toyama City’s largest street festival, drawing hundreds of thousands of visitors.

The festival flourished during the Edo period when Hie Shrine served as the sōubusuna (guardian shrine) for both Toyama Castle and the surrounding town. In 1690, Maeda Masatoshi, the second lord of the Toyama Domain, donated two mikoshi (portable shrines), establishing the tradition of the mikoshi togyō (procession) through the city streets. Historically, the mikoshi would even spend a night inside the castle, symbolizing the deep bond between the ruling lords and the townspeople.

Modern times brought changes; the original 17th-century mikoshi were destroyed during the 1945 air raids. Today, the festival continues with a single mikoshi, accompanied by a massive ōjishi-gashira (Great Lion Head). Despite these transformations, the festival remains the heartbeat of Toyama, blending solemn Shinto rituals with a massive, vibrant carnival atmosphere.

Location and Date of the Event

  • Location: Hie Shrine and the surrounding Sōgawa/Sannōmachi area, central Toyama City.
  • Address: 4-12 Sannōmachi, Toyama-shi, Toyama-ken (〒930-0064 富山県富山市山王町4-12).
  • Access: A 5-minute walk from the Nishichō or Grand Plaza-mae tram stops. Also accessible via the Sōgawa bus stop (5-minute walk).
  • Date: Fixed dates from May 31st to June 2nd every year. The main festivities peak on June 1st and 2nd.
  • 2026 Edition: Sunday, May 31st – Tuesday, June 2nd, 2026.

Event Schedule

The festival spans three days, transforming the city center into a sea of food stalls (yatai) and traditional music.

May 31st & June 1st: These are the primary days for the mikoshi togyō and shishi-mai (lion dance). On the 31st, the procession tours the western ujiko districts, while on the 1st, it visits the eastern districts. The parade departs the shrine around 8:30 AM and makes its grand return (gokankō) around 5:00 PM.

Nightly Atmosphere: The true "Sannō-san" experience happens in the evening. Hundreds of stalls line the streets, offering everything from local snacks to carnival games. The sound of fue (flutes) and taiko (drums) fills the air as the ōjishi-gashira leads the mikoshi back to the shrine through the dense, excited crowds.

June 2nd: The final day often focuses on shrine rituals and the last evening of the street fair, providing a final chance for locals to enjoy the festive spirit before the summer heat truly sets in.

Practical Advice

Photography

The best time for photos is between 4:30 PM and 6:00 PM during the gokankō. The golden hour light hitting the ōjishi-gashira as it pushes through the narrow, lantern-lit streets creates a classic "matsuri" aesthetic. Stay near the shrine entrance for the high-energy finale.

Weather

Expect mild to humid conditions. Toyama is known for sudden showers around this time of year. Bring a compact poncho—umbrellas are almost impossible to use in the crowded stall-lined streets of Sannōmachi.

Transport

Avoid driving. Parking in central Toyama becomes non-existent and many streets are under traffic control (kōtsū kisei). Use the Toyama City Tram; it's efficient and drops you right at the edge of the festival zone.

Visitor Tips

If you want to see the shishi-mai up close without the massive evening crush, try to catch the procession earlier in the morning (around 9:00 AM) as it leaves the shrine. Use the phrase: "Omikoshi wa doko o tōrimasu ka?" (Where will the mikoshi pass through?) to find the best viewing spot on the route.

What to Bring

Cash (essential for food stalls), a power bank, wet wipes (for street food), and a sturdy bag for any shrine charms (omamori) or souvenirs you purchase.
