About
Name in Japanese and English
- 春の高山祭(山王祭)(はるのたかやままつり・さんのうまつり)
- Takayama Haru Matsuri, the spring festival of Takayama (Sannō Matsuri)
History
The Takayama Haru Matsuri(春の高山祭, Haru no Takayama Matsuri), also called San’nō Matsuri(山王祭, Sannō matsuri), is one of the two major Takayama Matsuri(高山祭, Takayama matsuri)held in Takayama(高山市, Takayama-shi), in Gifu Prefecture(岐阜県, Gifu-ken). It is the annual festival of the Hie Shrine(日枝神社, Hie Jinja), the guardian shrine of the former castle town, specifically the southern sector of the old town (旧城下町南半分, kyū-jōkamachi minami hanbun).
Its fame comes from the yatai(屋台, yatai, richly decorated floats/processional structures), the craftsmanship of artisans (lacquer, sculpture, metalwork, textiles), and the public performances of karakuri(からくり, karakuri, automata). The entire “float rites” are known as Takayama Matsuri no Yatai Gyōji(高山祭の屋台行事, Takayama matsuri no yatai gyōji)and are listed as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage, which has further enhanced the international reputation of the festival.
Location and Date of the Event
- Location: 日枝神社(ひえじんじゃ, Hie Jinja)and the historic center of Takayama, with passage to the 御旅所(おたびしょ, Otabisho).
- Address: 〒506-0822 岐阜県高山市城山156(156 Shiroyama, Takayama-shi, Gifu 506-0822).
- Access: from JR 高山駅(たかやまえき, Takayama-eki), allow about 20 to 25 minutes on foot to Hie Jinja (quicker to reach the old town center). During the festival, expect traffic restrictions in the parade area and prioritize walking.
- Date: April 14 and 15 each year.
Schedule
The festival takes place over 2 days, with a very “whole town celebration” atmosphere: traditional sounds, crowded alleys, street food aromas, and moments of silence during ritual passages. The Hie Jinja(日枝神社, Hie Jinja)provides the religious setting, but the visitor experience mainly focuses on the historic center and the streets where the yatai appear.
The highlights revolve around the yatai no hikimawashi(屋台曳き回し, yatai no hikimawashi, “float outings and parades”) and the demonstrations of karakuri hōnō(からくり奉納, karakuri hōnō), where automata perform a precise choreography. The procession ritual also includes the passage to the Otabisho(御旅所, Otabisho), a symbolic resting place where the deity “makes a stop.”
The most spectacular moment is often the nighttime part, when the floats are illuminated by rows of lanterns: yomatsuri(夜祭, yomatsuri), a very special atmosphere, between warm glow, lacquered wood, and silent crowds. Note: in case of rain, some sequences may be shortened or cancelled without rescheduling, to protect the floats and their decorations.
Practical Tips
Photos
For iconic images, aim for the 中橋(なかばし, Nakabashi) area and the main streets of the old town: you can frame yatai + wooden houses with real depth. For the yomatsuri(夜祭, yomatsuri), arrive very early: the best spots fill up quickly, and a short zoom helps isolate details (gilding, lacquer, sculptures) despite the crowd.
Weather
Mid-April in Takayama: mornings and evenings are often cool (mountain town), with a colder feel as soon as the sun sets. Plan layered clothing and shoes suitable for long walks and standing.
Transport
The best plan is to come by train to Takayama-eki(高山駅, Takayama-eki), then do everything on foot. During the two days, some streets in the center are regulated: if you have a car, park it early in an authorized parking lot on the immediate outskirts, then walk.
Visitor Tips
If you want to enjoy without being crowded, aim for early time slots (before the influx) and make a second visit late in the day for the atmosphere. Useful words on local announcements: 交通規制(こうつうきせい, kōtsū kisei) = traffic restrictions, 中止(ちゅうし, chūshi) = cancelled (often due to weather).
What to Bring
Cash (for stands), portable charger, light warm jacket, poncho (useful in crowds), and something to protect your photo equipment (small bag, cloth).
