Name in Japanese and English

  • 住吉大社御田植神事(すみよしたいしゃ おたうえしんじ)
  • Otaue Shinji of Sumiyoshi-taisha, rice transplanting rite

History

The Sumiyoshi Taisha Otaue Shinji(住吉大社御田植神事)is one of the major agrarian rites of Sumiyoshi-taisha(住吉大社)in Osaka. It is a rice transplanting (田植え) ceremony celebrating the start of the rice-growing cycle, with prayers for fertility and a bountiful harvest. The shrine presents it as a rite carried out without shortening any steps, observing old forms and a highly codified protocol.

According to shrine tradition, its origin would date back to the establishment of Sumiyoshi-taisha, when 神功皇后 (Jingū Kōgō) is said to have designated an offering field (御供田) and brought 植女 (ueme) from 長門国 (Nagato no kuni, an area corresponding today to Yamaguchi Prefecture). Medieval sources already mention performing arts associated with the rite, such as 猿楽 (sarugaku) and 田楽 (dengaku), suggesting that it was a large-scale ceremony as early as the Kamakura period. After the upheavals of the modern era, the tradition remained alive, and the ceremony was designated a national 重要無形民俗文化財 (jūyō mukei minzoku bunkazai, Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property).

How it unfolds

The rite takes place as one large continuous sequence, from the shrine to the sacred field. The atmosphere alternates between solemnity (prayers, purification) and traditional spectacle (dances, music, parades), making it a very popular event in the city. Worshippers and visitors come to seek protection for the crops and good fortune, while enjoying a living tableau of rural traditions in the heart of Osaka.

The ceremony begins with the purification (お祓い) of the participants, followed by an offering and ritual proclamation at the first main hall. The procession then forms and heads to 御田 (Otaue), where the purification of the four sides is performed with 御神水 (goshinsui, sacred water), followed by the handing over of the young rice seedlings, 早苗 (sanae), passed from the 植女 (ueme) to the participants in charge of transplanting.

In the center of the field, a stage hosts a series of ritual and festive performances, including 八乙女舞 (Yaotome mai) performed by miko, armored processions known as 風流武者行事 (fūryū musha gyōji), as well as dances linked to transplanting such as 田植踊 (taue odori). The finale highlights the famous 住吉踊 (Sumiyoshi odori) as the transplanting comes to an end, giving a very “matsuri”-like conclusion—joyful and collective.

Practical tips

Photos

The best images come from the contrast between the stage in the middle of the field and the transplanting rows. Arrive early to spot a clear angle, because the crowd thickens quickly. For the dance, choose a slightly diagonal viewpoint (more depth, fewer heads in the frame). Think about “detail” shots (hands, seedlings, costumes, instruments), which are often more readable than overly wide shots.

Weather

Mid-June in Osaka can be hot and humid (tsuyu season, 梅雨). Plan breathable clothing, water, and compact rain protection. The ground around the dirt areas can be damp: stable shoes that are easy to clean.

Transport

Access is easy by train (Nankai and Hankai). To avoid peak congestion, arrive before the announced start around 13 h, and allow extra time for the return, as platforms can suddenly fill up after the main highlights end.

Visitor tips

If you want to see both the “shrine” part and the field, start near Daiichi Hongū (第一本宮), then follow the flow toward Otaue (御田). Useful phrase: 御田はどこですか (Otaue wa doko desu ka ?) to ask where the field is. For a calmer view, move slightly to the edge of the field: you’ll lose a bit of proximity, but gain visibility.

What to bring

Cash, water, a towel, a fan, rain protection, a power bank, a microfiber cloth (humidity), and mosquito repellent if you’re sensitive. In case of strong heat: a cap and a small sunscreen.
