About

Name in Japanese and English

  • 酒田まつり
  • Sakata Matsuri, the grand festival of the port city of Sakata

History

The Sakata Matsuri(酒田まつり, Sakata matsuri)is the grand traditional festival of Sakata(酒田市, Sakata-shi)in Yamagata Prefecture(山形県, Yamagata-ken). It is held every year from May 19 to 21 and is also known by its former name Sannō-sai(山王祭, Sannō-sai). It corresponds to the annual festival (例祭, reisai) related to the Kamihie Jinja(上日枝神社, Kami Hie Jinja)and Shimohie Jinja(下日枝神社, Shimo Hie Jinja)shrines.

The festival’s identity includes a ritual dimension (神事, shinji) and a festive “city matsuri” dimension (祭り, matsuri) centered on the shopping district. The most emblematic elements are the large lions(大獅子, ōjishi), the floats(山車, dashi), and the processions (行列, gyōretsu). Some recent years have seen reduced formats (縮小, shukushō) or partial cancellations (中止, chūshi), before a gradual return to a fuller program.

Location and Date of the Event

  • Location: downtown Sakata, notably Nakamachi / Naka-dōri(中町(中通り), Nakamachi (Naka-dōri)), with moments linked to the Hie Jinja(日枝神社, Hie Jinja)and Shimohie Jinja(下日枝神社, Shimo Hie Jinja)shrines.
  • Address: 山形県酒田市中町(中通り)ほか(Sakata-shi, Nakamachi (Naka-dōri), Yamagata). Shrine landmark: 〒998-0037 山形県酒田市日吉町1-7(日枝神社).
  • Access: from JR Sakata Station(酒田駅, Sakata-eki), about 15 minutes on foot to the center (中町, Nakamachi) or by bus (a few minutes). By car: access via Sakata routes, then public/temporary parking depending on the edition.
  • Date: May 19–21, every year (3 days).

Schedule

The festival lasts 3 days (3日間, mikka-kan) and mainly takes place in the streets of the center (中通り, Naka-dōri). The atmosphere is that of a large urban matsuri: entertainment, stages (ステージ, sutēji) and stalls (露店, roten) depending on the edition, with several processions (行列, gyōretsu) and parades.

May 19 often corresponds to the eve of the festival Yoimatsuri(宵祭り, yoimatsuri)with a more “evening” atmosphere and activities in the city center.

May 20 is generally the heart of the festival, often presented as Honmatsuri(本祭り, honmatsuri): rituals (式台の儀, shikidai no gi), procession (渡御行列, togyō gyōretsu), float parades (山車行列, dashi gyōretsu) and sometimes a historical parade (時代行列, jidai gyōretsu).

The most iconic image remains that of the large lions(大獅子, ōjishi)and the tradition where the lion “bites” (パックン, pakkun) the heads of children to wish for growth and good health (健やか, sukoyaka).

Practical Tips

Photos

For strong images, aim for May 20 (本祭り, honmatsuri): the parades (山車行列, dashi gyōretsu) and lion scenes offer the most dynamic moments. To capture the “pakkun” (パックン, pakkun), position yourself where the procession slows down and maintain a high shutter speed.

Weather

Mid-May weather can alternate between mildness and wind (風, kaze). Bring a light windbreaker layer. In case of rain (雨, ame), some parts may be adjusted: a poncho and protection for your equipment are useful.

Transport

The easiest is to arrive by train at 酒田駅Sakata-eki)then walk to the center. By car, anticipate parking (駐車場, chūshajō) and possible traffic restrictions near the central streets.

Visitor Tips

To avoid crowds (混雑, konzatsu), enjoy May 19 (宵祭り, yoimatsuri) for the atmosphere and keep May 20 for the major parades. Useful phrase: 「山車行列は何時からですか?」Dashi gyōretsu wa nanji kara desu ka?, “What time does the float parade start?”).

What to Bring

Cash(現金, genkin), portable battery, comfortable shoes, windbreaker, and a small bag to keep your hands free during the parades.
