About

Name in Japanese and English

  • 岡田春まつり(おかだはるまつり)
  • Okada Haru Matsuri, the Okada Spring Festival

History

The Okada Haru Matsuri(岡田春まつり, okada haru matsuri)is the major spring event of the Okada(岡田, Okada)district in Chita(知多市, Chita-shi), located in Aichi Prefecture(愛知県, Aichi-ken). It is a dashi matsuri(山車祭り, dashi matsuri, “festival of floats”) where three dashi(山車, dashi)gather.

The three floats bear names related to the elements: Higuruma(日車, hi-guruma, “sun float”), Ameguruma(雨車, ame-guruma, “rain float”), and Kazaguruma(風車, kaza-guruma, “wind float”). A local belief often associates the name of the sen-guruma(先車, sen-sha, “lead float”, annual rotation) with the weather on the day of the festival.

Okada’s signature feature is the presence of two puppet arts on the floats: the deku(木偶, deku, puppet operated by san-nin-zukai(三人遣い, san-nin-zukai, “three manipulators”)) and the karakuri ningyō(からくり人形, karakuri ningyō, “mechanical automata/puppets”). Spectacularly, the float’s rotation maneuver, nejimawashi(捻回し, neji-mawashi, “pivot/forced turn”), is one of the most anticipated moments.

Location and Date of the Event

  • City: 知多市(Chita-shi), 愛知県(Aichi-ken).
  • Main sites:
    • 岡田大門前(おかだ だいもんまえ, Okada daimon-mae
    • 岡田神明社(おかだ しんめいしゃ, Okada Shimmeisha)and 白山宮(はくさんぐう, Hakusangū)area (key areas related to the dedication procession)
  • Address (main landmark): 〒478-0021 愛知県知多市岡田西島29-1(Okada Daimon-mae area).
  • Date: variable. Usual rule: “a Sunday close to April 16”(4月16日に近い日曜日, shigatsu jūroku-nichi ni chikai nichiyōbi).

Schedule

The festival generally takes place over two days: Saturday evening, shingaku(試楽, shingaku, “rehearsal/eve of the festival”) with a chōchin gyōretsu(提灯行列, chōchin gyōretsu, “lantern parade”) and musical offerings, then Sunday, honmatsuri(本祭, hon-matsuri, “main festival”) when the floats circulate and gather.

The highlight is the gathering of the three dashi(三台の山車, sandai no dashi)at Okada daimon-mae(岡田大門前, Okada daimon-mae), with demonstrations of deku(木偶, deku)and sometimes karakuri(からくり, karakuri). The teams also perform float maneuvers, including the nejimawashi(捻回し, neji-mawashi).

In case of rain, some parts may be reduced or the float circulation(山車の運行, dashi no unkō)may be canceled, while the rites (祈祷, kitō) are maintained.

Practical Tips (Summary)

Photos

For the nejimawashi(捻回し, neji-mawashi), position yourself at an angle in an open area: the rotation is fast and the crowd becomes dense. For the deku(木偶, deku)and the karakuri ningyō(からくり人形, karakuri ningyō), aim for a slightly elevated position (curb edge, back of the row) as heads in front quickly block the view.

Weather

Mid-April in Aichi: variable mildness, possible showers. Bring a light poncho (more practical than an umbrella among the floats) and a light layer for the evening of shingaku(試楽, shingaku).

Transport

Typical access: reach Meitetsu Asakura Station(名鉄 朝倉駅, Asakura-eki), then take the Chita Bus(知多バス, chita basu)and get off at Daimon-mae(大門前, Daimon-mae), a few steps from the site. On the day, check temporary parking and local traffic.
