About
Name in Japanese and English
- 松前さくらまつり
- Matsumae Sakura Matsuri, the cherry blossom festival of Matsumae (Hokkaidō)
History
The Matsumae Sakura Matsuri(松前さくらまつり, Matsumae sakura matsuri)is held in Matsumae(松前町, Matsumae-chō), in the southwest of Hokkaidō (北海道, Hokkaidō), around Matsumae Kōen(松前公園, Matsumae kōen)and the Matsumae-jō castle(松前城, Matsumae-jō, also called Fukuyama-jō 福山城, Fukuyama-jō). The site is famous for the combination “castle + sakura”, and for a long blooming period thanks to the mix of early, mid-season, and late varieties(早咲き・中咲き・遅咲き, hayazaki/nakazaki/osozaki) that span several weeks.
Matsumae’s reputation as a “museum of sakura” is explained by the botanical richness of the park: about 250 varieties and 10,000 cherry trees are counted there (250種・1万本, 250-shu/ichiman-bon). Over time, the town has strengthened this identity by developing reference spaces, including a collection garden of the “sakura mihon-en” type(桜見本園, sakura mihon-en, sample garden) which highlights rare cultivars and local varieties. Today, the festival is as much a hanami(花見, hanami, flower viewing) event as a major tourist attraction, with stalls, activities, and highlights concentrated on weekends.
Location and Date of the Event
- Location: Matsumae Kōen(松前公園, Matsumae kōen)and the area around Matsumae-jō(松前城, Matsumae-jō), in Matsumae (松前町, Matsumae-chō).
- Address: 〒049-1511 北海道松前郡松前町松城(Matsushiro, Matsumae-chō, Matsumae-gun, Hokkaidō).
- Access: from JR Kikonai-eki(木古内駅, Kikonai-eki), bus to Matsumae, stop “Matsushiro”(松城, Matsushiro)then about 7 min on foot to the park. By car, allow about 2 hours from Hakodate depending on traffic. Paid parking is announced, often 500 yen per session.
- Date: generally from mid/end April to early/mid May (exact dates announced each year, over about 2 to 3 weeks).
- Date type: variable date — window set according to the blooming season (開花状況, kaika jōkyō) and organizational choices.
Program
The festival is experienced as a large hanami(花見, hanami)walk in a historic park: alternating views of the castle, cherry tree-lined paths, and lively areas with stalls (屋台, yatai) and stages. Access to the park is generally free, and attendance rises sharply on weekends and holidays.
Highlights vary by edition, but often include: cultural performances (sometimes geinō 芸能, geinō, local arts), family events around May 5, and time slots dedicated to illuminations. During the matsuri period, a lighting-up (ライトアップ, raitōappu) is frequently announced from sunset until 9 p.m., depending on the blooming status.
What makes Matsumae unique is the feeling of a “long season”: you can target an early variety one day, then return a week later for late varieties, all while keeping the castle as a backdrop. Another highly sought-after attraction: the “three great trees” (三大名木, sandai meiboku) in and around the park, including the Ketsumyaku-zakura(血脈桜, Ketsumyaku-zakura) at Kōzen-ji (光善寺, Kōzen-ji), the Ezo Kasumi-zakura(蝦夷霞桜, Ezo Kasumi-zakura) at Ryūun-in (龍雲院, Ryūun-in), and the Meoto-zakura(夫婦桜, Meoto-zakura) near Tenjinzaka-mon (天神坂門, Tenjinzaka-mon).
Practical Tips
Photos
For the signature shot, position yourself with Matsumae-jō(松前城, Matsumae-jō)in the background and branches in the foreground: at sunrise/late afternoon, you gain depth on the petals. For the illuminations (ライトアップ, raitōappu), aim for a compact tripod or solid stabilization: the crowd can be dense, so find a fixed spot early.
Weather
At this time, Hokkaidō can still be cool and windy (風, kaze), especially in the evening. Bring a warm layer + windbreaker, and thin gloves if you stay outside for a long time for photos.
Transport
If you come by bus from Kikonai(木古内, Kikonai), check return schedules before leaving (lower frequency in rural areas). By car, anticipate parking search on weekends: arrive early or aim for a “late day” slot for the illumination.
Visitor Tips
Since there are many varieties, think “2 visits”: one at the start for early bloomers, one a week later for late bloomers. Useful phrase: 「ライトアップは何時までですか?」 (raitōappu wa nanji made desu ka?, “Until what time is the illumination?”).
What to Bring
Cash (現金, genkin) for yatai, external battery, a small towel (タオル, taoru), and a bag to protect your gear if drizzling. If you buy souvenirs, bring a sturdy tote bag.
