- 高野山青葉まつり(こうやさん あおばまつり)
- Kōyasan Aoba Matsuri, festival celebrating the birth of Kōbō Daishi
History
The Kōyasan Aoba Matsuri(高野山青葉まつり) is one of the major annual events of Mount Kōya(Kōyasan(高野山), Wakayama Prefecture). It celebrates the birth of Kōbō Daishi, also known as Kūkai(Kūkai(空海)), founder of Shingon Buddhism(Shingonshū(真言宗)) and the guardian figure of Kōyasan. In the tradition of Kōyasan, June 15, Kūkai's birth date, is associated with the name “Aoba Matsuri”, "the festival of young green leaves"(aoba(青葉)).
The religious heart of the celebration is the Buddhist ceremony Sōso Gōtan-e(宗祖降誕会), held at Kōyasan Daishi Kyōkai(高野山大師教会), which marks the master's anniversary. Around this liturgical base, the festival has gradually structured itself as a major public event, featuring a grand parade on the main thoroughfare of Kōyasan. Since Reiwa 2(令和2), the organization has also clarified the schedule: the “matsuri” part (parade) is generally set for the 2nd Sunday of June(6-gatsu dai-ni nichiyōbi(6月第2日曜日)), while the birth ceremony at Daishi Kyōkai remains on June 15.
Concretely, this creates two easy points of reference: a spiritual moment (Gōtan-e) on the anniversary day, and a festive moment (parade) scheduled to attract more people during the weekend. In some years, when the date "falls well," the event may be realigned to June 15 to make everything coincide, with an enhanced program.
Location and Date of the Event
- Location: Kōyasan(高野山), Kōya town(Kōya-chō(高野町)), around 金剛峯寺前広場(Kongōbuji-mae hiroba) and along the parade route.
- Address: main landmark for the religious part: 〒648-0211 和歌山県伊都郡高野町高野山347(高野山大師教会). The parade crosses the center of Kōyasan(Ichinohashi(一の橋) → Kongōbuji-mae sector).
- Access: Nankai train to Gokurakubashi(極楽橋) then cable car to Kōyasan-eki(高野山駅), then Nankai Rinkan bus(南海りんかんバス) towards Kongōbuji-mae(金剛峯寺前) or Reihōkan-mae(霊宝館前) depending on the destination. On parade days, traffic restrictions are possible.
- Date: in June. Religious landmark: June 15(Sōso Gōtan-e(宗祖降誕会), in the morning). Festive landmark: 2nd Sunday of June (Hanamidō togyo(花御堂渡御), at noon, depending on the year).
Event Schedule
The Aoba Matsuri is experienced as a great mountain festival, amidst cedars and temples. The morning is rather "religious," with the Sōso Gōtan-e(宗祖降誕会) ceremony at Daishi Kyōkai, while the afternoon transforms into a true popular festival, with crowds, music, and a parade.
The most famous highlight is Hanamidō togyo(花御堂渡御), a parade led by a decorated and carried/towed hanamidō(花御堂, “flower pavilion”), evoking the birth of the Buddha. The procession stretches along the main artery of Kōyasan, accompanied by Daishi ondo(大師音頭) and festive groups. Emblematic figures are also seen: Chigo Daishi(稚児大師) and the Aoba musume(青葉娘), who sometimes distribute sange(散華) petals or blessing papers for "good luck."
The day before, a pre-festival(zen’ya-sai(前夜祭)) may include a luminous procession of the Kōya nebuta(高野ねぶた) type, with floats/lanterns, offering a very different, more nocturnal and spectacular atmosphere. Depending on the weather, some parts may be reduced or cancelled(uten chūshi(雨天中止)): on Kōyasan, rain and fog can truly change the experience.
Practical Advice
Photography
For the parade, aim for a spot where the road widens(Kongōbuji-mae side): you will have more distance to frame the hanamidō and the crowd. If you want portraits, stand near where the Chigo Daishi(稚児大師) and the Aoba musume(青葉娘) pass, but arrive early: it fills up quickly. At night, for Kōya nebuta(高野ねぶた), bring a fast lens and a sufficient shutter speed(the lanterns move, they blur quickly).
Weather
June in Kōyasan can be cool in the morning and humid(start of tsuyu(梅雨)), with possible fog. Take a light warm layer + a compact raincoat. Showers are frequent, and the humidity can be surprising, even when Osaka is already in "summer" mode.
Transport
On event days, clearly prioritize the train + cable car + bus: traffic can be complicated, and restrictions are possible around the route. On the way back, anticipate a crowded bus after the end of the parade: if you can, delay your departure by 20 to 30 minutes, or enjoy a break in a temple/near the Okunoin(奥之院) cemetery.
Visitor Tips
If you want to see everything without rushing: morning at Daishi Kyōkai(高野山大師教会) for the "ceremony" atmosphere, then position yourself early on the parade axis for Hanamidō togyo(花御堂渡御). Useful phrase: “Gyōretsu wa doko o tōrimasu ka?”(行列はどこを通りますか?) to ask where the procession passes.
What to Bring
Cash, water, towel, rain protection, comfortable shoes(quite a bit of walking), a light sweater, power bank. Very Kōyasan bonus: a light waterproof bag to protect your camera and papers in case of fog/drizzle.
