About
Name in Japanese and English
- 八幡まつり(はちまんまつり)
- Hachiman Matsuri, the festival of torches and great drums of Ōmi-Hachiman
History
The Hachiman Matsuri(八幡まつり, hachiman matsuri)is one of the major spring events in Ōmi-Hachiman(近江八幡, Ōmi-Hachiman), Shiga Prefecture(滋賀県, Shiga-ken). It is the annual festival (例祭, reisai) of the Himure Hachimangū Shrine(日牟禮八幡宮, Himure Hachimangū), known as a hi matsuri(火祭り, hi matsuri, “fire festival”).
Local tradition links the origin of the festival to a narrative of “guidance by light”: torches (松明, taimatsu) are said to have been lit to lead a procession related to Ōjin Tennō(応神天皇, Ōjin Tennō)to Hachiman. Over time, the festival has taken a very clear two-part form: on the night of April 14, the “torch festival” (松明まつり, taimatsu matsuri) and, on April 15, the “drum festival” (太鼓祭り, taiko matsuri) centered around great drums (大太鼓, ōdaiko).
Practical note: the date is fixed (4/14–4/15), regardless of the day of the week. Prior to this, a ritual for preparing the torches (松明結い, taimatsu yui, “assembly/binding of torches”) traditionally takes place on the Sunday just before April 14–15.

Flow of Events
April 14: the evening is called “Torch Matsuri”(松明まつり, taimatsu matsuri). Giant torches, often constructed from plant materials (e.g., reeds, よし, yoshi), are offered to the shrine, and then the ritual lighting(奉火, hōka)takes place. The visual intensity comes from the columns of fire (火柱, hibashira) and the contrast with the night around the shrine.
April 15: it is the “drum festival”(太鼓祭り, taiko matsuri). The great drums (大太鼓, ōdaiko) of the participating groups begin to move, then perform the most anticipated moment: the entrance to the shrine(宮入, miyairi), with a solemn procession and a very “physical” energy (bearers, shouts, rhythm).
In case of rain (雨天, uten), the form may be adapted (代渡り, daiwatari, “replacement parade” for certain sequences), but the core structure of 14=fire, 15=drums remains the guiding principle.
Practical Tips
Photos
On the evening of the 14th, aim for the torches at the moment of hōka(奉火, “lighting”) to capture the peak of flames. On the 15th, position yourself on the approach axis to the shrine for the ōdaiko miyairi(大太鼓宮入, “entrance of the great drums”): you will get both the atmosphere and the tension of the movement. Arrive early: the area around the shrine fills up quickly.
Weather
Mid-April in Shiga: mild temperatures are possible, but cool evenings and showers are frequent. Poncho recommended (傘より便利, kasa yori benri, “more practical than an umbrella”) when you are in a crowd.
Transport
Key station: 近江八幡駅(おうみはちまんえき, Ōmi-Hachiman-eki). Then, bus towards the Ōsugi-chō(大杉町, Ōsugi-chō) area or walk depending on your itinerary. If driving, expect traffic restrictions (交通規制, kōtsū kisei) and use public parking lots around the center.
