About
Name in Japanese and English
- 分水おいらん道中(ぶんすいおいらんどうちゅう)
- Bunsui Oiran Dōchū, the procession of the oiran of Bunsui
History
The Bunsui Oiran Dōchū(分水おいらん道中, bunsui oiran dōchū)is the flagship event of the tsubame sakura matsuri(つばめ桜まつり, tsubame sakura matsuri)in Bunsui(分水, bunsui), in the city of Tsubame(燕市, Tsubame-shi), Niigata Prefecture (新潟県, Niigata-ken). The main scene is the Ōkōzu Bunsui(大河津分水, Ōkōzu bunsui)and its famous sakura namiki(桜並木, sakura namiki, “cherry blossom avenue”), a place associated with the history of the diversion of the Shinano River(信濃川, Shinano-gawa)and the arrival of spring in the region.
Local tradition tells that the idea of a costumed parade (仮装行列, kasō gyōretsu) developed as a gesture of hospitality (おもてなし, omotenashi) towards visitors who came to admire the cherry blossoms, with a dimension of gratitude (感謝, kansha) linked to the Ōkōzu Bunsui. Today, the event features three elected oiran(花魁, oiran), accompanied by their entourage, in a slow and theatrical march that contrasts with the “postcard” image of the sakura.
The schedule is not strictly fixed: long held in mid-April, it has been moved forward in recent years to better coincide with the blooming (開花, kaika). In case of bad weather, some sequences can be moved indoors (屋内開催, okunai kaisai) or adapted.

Program
The principle is simple and spectacular: three oiran(花魁, oiran)parade in sumptuous attire, surrounded by an entourage of traditional characters. The walk follows the codified step called soto-hachimonji(外八文字, soto-hachimonji)with tall koma-geta(高下駄, kō-geta)with three teeth, a deliberately slow rhythm to “stage” each step.
Around the oiran, there are attendants and ceremonial roles such as tekomai(手古舞, tekomai), shinzō(新造, shinzō), kamuro(禿, kamuro)and sometimes maiko(舞妓, maiko). The event generally takes place in two parts at two sites (center of Jizōdō then the cherry blossom area at Ōkōzu Bunsui), with very dense crowds at the departures and at “photo” spots.
As it is a major spring event, there may be traffic restrictions (交通規制, kōtsū kisei), temporary parking lots, and shuttles. And if the weather turns bad, the organization can switch to an adapted version (modified route or indoors).
Practical Tips
Photos
For portraits, position yourself slightly at an angle on the route: the soto-hachimonji (外八文字, soto-hachimonji) step looks better in 3/4 view than head-on. At the sakura namiki (桜並木, sakura namiki), a short zoom helps isolate the oiran in a “corridor” of flowers, but also bring a wide-angle for the atmosphere (crowd + cherry trees + riverbank). Avoid sudden changes of position: the crowd density can be high.
Weather
Early/mid-April in Niigata: variable weather, possible showers. Bring a warm layer (cool evenings) and a poncho (more practical than an umbrella in the middle of the crowd).
Transport
The railway landmark is JR 分水駅(ぶんすいえき, Bunsui-eki). On event days, the organization often sets up dedicated parking lots and shuttles (シャトルバス, shatoru basu) to the Ōkōzu Bunsui area. Also check the regulated traffic zones (交通規制, kōtsū kisei) before coming.
