Name
Susanoo no Mikoto
Identity
Susanoo no Mikoto (須佐之男命) is a major kami of Shintō mythology, often associated with storms, violent winds, and the sea. His character is marked by great power and a highly unpredictable temperament. He is best known as the brother of Amaterasu Ōmikami, the sun goddess, and Tsukuyomi no Mikoto, the lunar deity, placing him at the very center of the foundational narratives of the Kojiki and the Nihon Shoki.
Mythological role
Susanoo embodies a form of raw and untamed energy: a force capable of destruction, but also of purification and renewal. In the myths, he passes through phases of disorder, exile, and redemption, making him a strikingly human-like figure in his narrative arc. Over time, he becomes a protector, particularly against calamities, once his chaotic power is redirected toward heroic deeds.
Famous myth
His most famous legend is the battle against the monstrous serpent
Yamata no Orochi (八岐大蛇) in the region of Izumo.
There, Susanoo encounters an elderly couple whose daughters have been devoured one by one
by the creature. He decides to save their last daughter,
Kushinada-hime.
By devising a plan involving strong sake, he weakens Orochi and ultimately slays it.
While cutting apart the serpent’s body, he discovers a legendary sword, often identified
as Kusanagi-no-Tsurugi. This episode marks Susanoo’s transformation from
a turbulent deity into a heroic protector.
Cult
Susanoo is venerated at many shrines throughout Japan, commonly for:
protection against calamities (illness, disasters, misfortune),
purification and renewal,
strength and courage in times of hardship.
His cult is especially strong in the Izumo region, where his myths are deeply rooted. In some areas, he is associated with rites intended to prevent epidemics or disasters, explaining why his worship retains a strong protective and appeasing dimension despite his stormy nature.
Symbolism
Susanoo symbolizes the storm, but above all what can emerge after chaos: purification, renewal, and restored order. He represents the archetype of the protective warrior, confronting overwhelming danger to safeguard the world. His symbols often revolve around elemental power (wind, sea, storms) and the sword discovered in his myth, a sign that raw force can be transformed into legitimate protection.
