History
The Yosakoi Sōran Matsuri (YOSAKOIソーラン祭り, Yosakoi Sōran Matsuri) is the grand dance festival of early summer in Sapporo (札幌, Sapporo), born in 1992. The founding idea is a very simple and effective "mash-up": take the energy of the Yosakoi (よさこい, yosakoi) from Kōchi, keep the emblematic naruko (鳴子, naruko) instrument, and mix it with the Sōran-bushi (ソーラン節, sōran-bushi) work song, a popular folk air from Hokkaidō. Result: explosive choreographies performed "in the city," with a slogan that has remained famous: 「街は舞台だ!」 (machi wa butai da, "the city is a stage!").
The festival grew very quickly and became a major showcase for dance teams from Hokkaidō, all of Japan, and sometimes from abroad. Its modern format is organized around several days of entertainment, with stages (会場, kaijō) and parades (パレード, parēdo) in the city center, particularly around Ōdōri Kōen (大通公園, Ōdōri Kōen) and Susukino (すすきの, Susukino).
The years 2020–2021 were marked by cancellations related to COVID, then the festival resumed in 2022, gradually regaining its scale. Today, the Yosakoi Sōran is considered one of Sapporo's major events: an urban celebration where people come as much for the performance (costumes, precision, energy) as for the atmosphere of an entire city "transformed into a stage."
Place and date of the event
- Place: Sapporo (札幌市, Sapporo-shi), mainly around Ōdōri Kōen (大通公園, Ōdōri Kōen), parade zones, and city center stages (e.g., Susukino (すすきの, Susukino)).

From Sapporo-eki (札幌駅), 1–2 subway stations or 15–20 min on foot depending on the target point.
- Date: early June, over 5 days. For 2026: June 10, 2026 (Wed.)–June 14, 2026 (Sun.).
- Date type: variable (set for a period in early June, not on a fixed annual date).
Sequence
The festival takes place over several days, building up to the weekend. The city hosts teams (チーム, chīmu) presenting choreographies mixing naruko (鳴子, naruko), passages inspired by Sōran-bushi (ソーラン節, sōran-bushi), and original creations. The atmosphere is very "Sapporo in stage mode": music everywhere, parades, stalls, continuous spectators.
Highlights are divided between the Ōdōri Park stages (大通公園会場, Ōdōri Kōen kaijō) and the parades (パレード, parēdo) where teams advance in formation. Some zones are "show" oriented (proximity, stands/viewing areas), others are ideal for feeling the raw energy as the groups pass by.
Another popular marker is the possibility of participating in a collective dance in a dedicated space depending on the year (e.g., "public" square), which gives the festival a "watch, but you can also join the party" feel.
Practical advice
Photos
For "iconic" photos, aim for the Ōdōri Kōen (大通公園, Ōdōri Kōen) stages where you can frame costumes + naruko + expressions. On the parades (パレード, parēdo), stand at the exit of a turn or near a crowd squeeze: formations tighten and energy "explodes" in the frame. Bring a light protection (rain cover): early June can surprise you with a quick shower.
Weather
Early June in Sapporo can go from mild in the sun to cool in the evening. The right strategy: layers (t-shirt + small fleece/light jacket) and a compact windbreaker. If you remain stationary for a long time, the perceived temperature can drop quickly.
Transport
Prioritize the subway (Ōdōri-eki / Susukino-eki) and walking: the center is smoothest without a car. Return trips after the final performances can be crowded, so plan your route and leave a margin if you need to catch a train.
Visitor tips
If you want "the best crowd-to-quality ratio," aim for weekday late afternoon slots or before noon. For parades, pick a fixed point and let the teams come to you: running from one site to another wastes a lot of time. Useful expression when weaving through: すみません (sumimasen).
To bring
Power bank, water bottle, towel (useful if it rains), small folding seat if you know you'll wait long, cash (stalls), and a light jacket for the end of the day.
