History
The Tonami Yotaka Matsuri(砺波夜高祭り)is the premier early-summer festival of Tonami City(砺波市), situated in the agricultural heartland of Toyama Prefecture(富山県). Traditionally, the festival is a time for the community to pray for bountiful harvests and local prosperity, themes deeply rooted in the Tonami-no(砺波野)region, which is famous for its vast rice fields and unique "dispersed settlement" (sankyo-son) landscapes.
The festival’s current form is largely traced back to the Taishō era(大正). It features massive, hand-crafted paper lantern floats called yotaka andon(夜高行燈), which are built and paraded by different local neighborhoods. While the first night focuses on the artistic beauty of these lanterns via a contest(行燈コンクール), the second night culminates in the spectacular tsukiawase(突合せ). This is a fierce, head-on collision where two giant floats crash into each other until they are partially demolished, earning the event its reputation as a kenka matsuri(喧嘩祭り, "clash festival").
Location and Date of the Event
- Location: Downtown Tonami, specifically the Honmachi(本町)and Demachi(出町)districts. The main clash events take place at the Honmachi intersection.
- Address: 〒939-1368 Toyama-ken, Tonami-shi, Honmachi.
- Access: JR Tonami Station(砺波駅, JR Jōhana Line)is approximately a 1-minute walk from the festival area. Strong recommendation: Use public transport as central streets are closed to traffic and parking is extremely limited.
- Date: Held annually on the 2nd Friday and Saturday of June. (Friday: Lantern Contest; Saturday: Tsukiawase clash).
- Date Type: Fixed by day of the week (variable dates).
Event Schedule
The festival spans two nights, transforming the quiet city of Tonami into a high-energy arena filled with street stalls, chanting, and traditional music. Participants wear neighborhood-specific happi(法被)coats, and the rhythm of the night is driven by taiko(太鼓)drums and the sharp clack of hyōshigi(拍子木)wooden clappers.
Day 1 (Friday): The "Beauty" phase. The andon konkūru(lantern contest)showcases the intricate craftsmanship of the yotaka andon. The lanterns are illuminated from within, displaying vibrant reds and traditional patterns as they are paraded in a relatively orderly fashion.
Day 2 (Saturday): The "Power" phase. The energy shifts as the floats converge for the tsukiawase. In this highly charged finale, two neighborhoods face off; the floats charge and slam into each other multiple times to the cheers of the crowd. The destruction of parts of the lantern is seen as an essential part of the ritual and a show of community strength.
Practical Advice
Photography
As a nocturne event, a fast lens (f/2.8 or wider) is essential. To capture the tsukiawase, position yourself diagonally to the impact zone; never stand directly in front or behind the floats for safety. This angle allows you to capture the motion of the charge and the explosive impact.
Weather
Early June coincides with the tsuyu(梅雨, rainy season). The air can be humid and warm, but temperatures may drop at night. Bring light, breathable layers and a waterproof jacket. Comfortable, non-slip shoes are a must as you will be standing on asphalt for several hours.
Transport
Arriving via JR Tonami Station is by far the most convenient method. If you must drive, arrive well before 5:00 PM to find parking on the outskirts of the city center. Be prepared for significant traffic congestion once the festival concludes.
Visitor Tips
For a more relaxed experience, visit on Friday evening to admire the artwork of the lanterns up close. On Saturday, once you find a good viewing spot for the clashes, hold your ground, as the crowds become very dense. If tokubetsu kanran seki(special viewing seats)are available for purchase, they are worth the investment for a clear, safe view of the action.
What to Bring
Cash (for food stalls), power bank, a compact poncho, a small towel for humidity, and earplugs if you are sensitive to loud noise (the drums and shouting are very intense up close).
