About
Name in Japanese and English
- 松江武者行列
- The Matsue Warriors' Procession
History
The Matsue Musha Gyōretsu is a spectacular historical reenactment commemorating the triumphant entry of Horio Yoshiharu (堀尾 吉晴) into his new castle and the founding of the city of Matsue in 1611. Horio Yoshiharu, nicknamed "仏の茂助" (Mosuke the Buddha) for his wisdom, is a central figure in the unification of Japan.
Although Matsue has a rich feudal history, this festival in its current form as a grand civic parade began in the 20th century to celebrate the city's identity as a former castle town (jōkamachi). Unlike some ancient religious rituals, this matsuri emphasizes historical pride and the accuracy of costumes from the Azuchi-Momoyama period and early Edo era. Participants, often local citizens, train for months to master the postures and handling of weapons (swords, spears, bows).
Location and Date of the Event
- Location: Shirakata-tenmangū Shrine (白潟天満宮) - Starting point of the procession.
- Address: 58-11 Tenjinmachi, Matsue-shi, Shimane 690-0064 (島根県松江市天神町58-11).
- Access: Only a 5-minute walk from JR Matsue Station. The shrine is ideally located to observe the troops' preparations before departure.
- Date: The first Saturday of April each year.
Event Progression
The festival transforms downtown Matsue into a living tableau of the 17th century. The goal is to recreate the atmosphere of the time when samurai paraded to escort their lord to his new fortress. It is an event that generally coincides with the Matsue Cherry Blossom Festival (Matsue Jozan Koen Sakura Matsuri).
The procession, composed of more than 200 participants in full armor, departs in the early afternoon. It features Samurai warriors, Ashigaru infantry units, noblewomen in colorful kimonos, and of course the lord Horio Yoshiharu with his family. The march is punctuated by war cries and demonstrations of sword and spear combat along the route.
The highlight is the Castle Entry Ceremony. Once the procession reaches the grounds of Matsue Castle (one of Japan’s few authentic keeps), a final performance is held in front of the ramparts. Spectators can watch the warriors climb the slopes of the park to symbolize the taking possession of the site.
Practical Tips
Photos
For iconic shots, position yourself near the Otemon Gate (main entrance of the castle) or along the bridge over the Ohashi River. The contrast between the samurai armor and the cherry blossoms is stunning. A telephoto lens is recommended to capture the details of the warriors’ expressions and the textures of the armor.
Weather
Early April in Matsue is often marked by a cool breeze coming from Lake Shinji. Temperatures range between 10°C and 18°C. Plan for light but wind-protective layers. In case of rain, the festival may be postponed or some parts of the parade modified.
Transport
Matsue is accessible via the Yakumo express train from Okayama. On the day of the festival, traffic is restricted in the city center. Use the Matsue Lake Line tourist bus that circles the main sites. Arrive at least 1.5 hours before the procession starts to secure a spot along the route.
Visitor Tips
Combine the festival with a cruise on the moats (Horikawa Pleasure Boat). Viewing the procession from the water offers a unique and relaxing perspective. After the parade, enjoy the nighttime illumination of the cherry blossoms (Yozakura) within the castle grounds for a magical atmosphere.
What to Bring
A route map (often distributed at the station), cash for food stalls (Yatai) at the foot of the castle, and a portable battery. If you plan to sit and wait for the procession, a small plastic ground sheet is essential.
