About

Name in Japanese and English

  • 弘前さくらまつり
  • Hirosaki Sakura Matsuri: the cherry blossom festival of Hirosaki (castle park)

History

The Hirosaki Sakura Matsuri弘前さくらまつり, hirosaki sakura matsuri)is held in Hirosaki Kōen弘前公園, hirosaki-kōen), the castle park of Hirosaki, in Aomori Prefecture(青森県, Aomori-ken). Here, the “matsuri” is the direct heir of a long history of planting and maintaining cherry trees: according to local tradition, the first plantings date back to 1715(正徳5年, Shōtoku 5), when samurai from the domain reportedly brought cherry trees from Arashiyama(嵐山, Arashiyama)in Kyōto. Later, during the Meiji era(明治, Meiji), the castle and its surroundings were gradually redeveloped, and the site was eventually opened as a public park, preparing the ground for a large collective “hanami”.

The “event” core started in the Taishō era(大正, Taishō): in 1918(大正7年, Taishō 7), the first 観桜会kan’ōkai, literally “cherry blossom viewing gathering”, sometimes locally pronounced “kango-kai”)was organized with parades, performances, and illuminations. In 1961(昭和36年, Shōwa 36), the event was renamed 弘前さくらまつり and became one of the major spring events in northern Japan. The war interrupted the festival for a time (mid-1940s), then it resumed and expanded thanks to donations and replantings: a major milestone occurred in 1956(昭和31年, Shōwa 31), with extensive plantings that shaped the current image of the cherry-lined moats.

Hirosaki’s “exceptional” reputation also comes from its way of nurturing its trees: often mentioned is the 弘前方式hirosaki-hōshiki), a maintenance approach inspired by apple tree pruning techniques (りんご, ringo) aiming to achieve dense and regular blooming. The result: beyond quantity, it is the quality of the scenes (tunnels, moats, views of the donjon) that has made the festival a national symbol of 花見hanami, “flower viewing”)and 夜桜yozakura, “night cherry blossoms”).

Location and Date of the Event

  • Location: Hirosaki Kōen(弘前公園, hirosaki-kōen), around Hirosaki-jō(弘前城, hirosaki-jō), city of Hirosaki(弘前市, Hirosaki-shi).
  • Address: 〒036-8356 青森県弘前市下白銀町1(Aomori-ken Hirosaki-shi Shimoshiroganechō 1).
  • Date: every year between mid-April and early May, with a period adjusted according to the blooming.
  • Date type: variable: dates are announced but can be advanced or adjusted depending on the state of the sakura (and a period of 準まつり体制, jun-matsuri taisei, may be activated).

Schedule

The Hirosaki Sakura Matsuri takes place over a long period (often 2 to 3 weeks) and is experienced as a “large urban hanami”: during the day, visitors come for the flower-covered paths, views of the moats and castle, and the strolling atmosphere; in the evening, it shifts to the ライトアップraitoappu, “lighting up”)for the 夜桜yozakura), when the sakura take on a completely different relief.

The typical timeline starts with the opening of observation areas and the most popular spaces, then the activity rises with the blooming. Visitors usually alternate between: the moats(濠, hori)and the outside of the moats(外濠, soto-bori); the historic enclosures (e.g. 本丸, honmaru, and 二の丸, ninomaru); and the iconic “spots” where the perfect scene is sought. Meanwhile, the “matsuri” spirit is found in the 屋台yatai, stalls) and rest areas, while some editions add cultural activities (e.g. processions or local mini-demonstrations).

What makes Hirosaki truly unique are its visual “phenomena” and visiting rituals. The most famous is the 花筏hanaikada, “petal raft”): when the flowers start to fall, the petals accumulate on the water of the moats and form a spectacular pink carpet, often sought as the number one photo moment. Another signature: the “postcard” scenes combining the castle and cherry trees, and the “tunnels” of branches where you literally walk under the flowers. Many visitors then make two visits: once during the day for landscape clarity, then once at night for the intensity of yozakura.

Practical Tips

Photos

Two targets: (1) the 花筏hanaikada)in the moats, ideal when blooming shifts to petal fall; (2) the “castle + sakura” views (弘前城, Hirosaki-jō). If you want to cover the essentials, scout during the day, then come back for the 夜桜yozakura)at the time of the ライトアップraitoappu). Bring a versatile lens and, if possible, a small telephoto to isolate scenes above the crowd.

Weather

In Hirosaki, late April can remain cold in the evening, especially with wind near the moats. Plan layers (fleece + windbreaker) and gear to stay outside for a long time. In case of rain, a poncho is handy to keep your hands free while taking photos.

Transport

Arrive early (morning) if you come by bus from 弘前駅Hirosaki-eki): at peak times, stops near the park gates fill up quickly. By car, aim for a “relay” parking if offered and finish on foot or by shuttle (depending on the edition).

Visitor Tips

Simple tip: watch for the announcement of 準まつり体制jun-matsuri taisei); if blooming is early, some illuminations and services start before the “official” period. And if you’re looking for the magic keyword to ask for the best viewpoints: “撮影スポットsatsuei supotto)”.

What to Bring

Cash (屋台, yatai), power bank, windbreaker, small towel (タオル, taoru), and light protection for your camera in case of rain.
