About

Name in Japanese and English

  • はな・はる・フェスタ
  • Hana Haru Festa, the spring festival of Tokushima

History

The Hana Haru Festa (はな・はる・フェスタ, Hana Haru Festa) is one of the major spring events in Tokushima (徳島市, Tokushima-shi), conceived as a showcase of the city and its traditions along the banks of Shinmachigawa (新町川, Shinmachigawa). The event has established itself as the “big preview” of the summer Awa Odori (阿波踊り, awa odori), highlighting the dance troupes called ren (連, ren) and their styles (female dance onna-odori 女踊り, male dance otoko-odori 男踊り).

In its spirit, the festival blends local culture and urban entertainment: performances on stages (特設ステージ, tokusetu sutēji), outdoor (屋外, yagai) and indoor (屋内, okunai) shows, markets, and gourmet areas. The heart of the event remains the Aibahama (藍場浜, Aibahama) area, which includes a park, riverside promenades (boardwalk: しんまちボードウォーク, Shinmachi Bōdowōku), and a large cultural hall, explaining the very “festival” format: it’s easy to move from one stage to another, from a demonstration to a booth, then to an Awa Odori performance.

Location and Date of the Event

  • Location: Aibahama area in Tokushima: Aibahama Park (藍場浜公園, Aibahama Kōen), Goseikon Plaza (御成婚広場, Goseikon Hiroba), and Awagin Hall (あわぎんホール, Awagin Hōru).
  • Address: 藍場浜公園 〒770-0835 徳島県徳島市藍場町1-7 / あわぎんホール 〒770-0835 徳島県徳島市藍場町2丁目14番地.
  • Access: JR Tokushima Station (徳島駅, Tokushima-eki) → about 3 to 5 minutes on foot. By car: from Tokushima IC (徳島IC, Tokushima IC) via main roads towards the station area; parking: paid parking lots nearby (駐車場, chūshajō).
  • Date: 2 days in April, usually mid-April (e.g.: 2025: Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 April, with typical hours 10am–8pm on Saturday and 10am–5pm on Sunday).
  • Date type: variable — scheduled each year on an April weekend (often mid-April) and officially announced a few weeks before.

Program

The Hana Haru Festa takes place over two days in a very festive downtown atmosphere, between park and riverbanks. Visitors come as much for the Awa Odori (阿波踊り, awa odori) as for the “city festival” part: booths, food, entertainment, music stage, and family programs.

Regarding dance, there is usually an alternation between outdoor (屋外, yagai) performances on an outdoor stage and indoor (屋内, okunai) shows at Awagin Hall (あわぎんホール, Awagin Hōru), sometimes with spectator areas like sajiki (桟敷, sajiki). The troupes (ren 連, ren) follow one another with their musicians (鳴り物, narimono): taiko drums (太鼓, taiko), shamisen (三味線, shamisen), fue flute (笛, fue) — perfect for discovering the codes before summer.

Around the stages, you often find a food area (キッチンカー, kicchin kā) and markets/booths of local products (物産, bussan): it is this mix of “dance + food + strolling” that makes the charm of the festival. The most striking: seeing Awa Odori in a springtime version, more accessible, with the possibility to switch from the grand spectacle to the riverside atmosphere in a few minutes.

Practical Tips

Photos

For Awa Odori (阿波踊り, awa odori): aim for outdoor (屋外, yagai) performances if you want movement and energy, and indoor (屋内, okunai) if you want cleaner images (stable lighting, stage framing). A small telephoto lens helps isolate expressions and hands. Tip: arrive a little before the troupes’ (ren 連, ren) performances to get a spot at the edge of the stage.

Weather

April in Tokushima is often mild, but the feeling can change quickly near the water (川, kawa): bring a windbreaker layer and something to handle a shower. If the day is long (10am–8pm), think “layers”: t-shirt + light outer layer, and comfortable shoes.

Transport

The easiest is the train: Tokushima-eki (徳島駅, Tokushima-eki) is very close, and you walk the rest. By car, count on paid parking (駐車場, chūshajō) around the station and riverbanks: arrive early if you want to park easily, especially on Saturday.

Visitor Tips

If you want to avoid the bulk of the crowd, aim for early morning (午前, gozen) or mid-afternoon rather than “end of day” slots. Useful phrase: “Shashin, ii desu ka?” (写真いいですか, “May I take a photo?”) if you want a close portrait of a dancer backstage.

What to Bring

Cash (現金, genkin) for booths, portable charger, light poncho, small towel (タオル, taoru), and snacks/drinks if you plan to visit several stages. If you want to stand for a long time, insoles or cushioned shoes make a big difference.
