History

The ふるさと萩原夏まつり is one of the major summer events in 萩原町（Hagiwara-chō）, in the city of 下呂市（Gero-shi） (Gifu Prefecture). Rooted in the atmosphere of Tanabata (七夕) celebrations, it highlights tanabata kazari (七夕飾り) (wish decorations) and turns the town center into a true open-air stage, with entertainment, mikoshi (神輿), and friendly community moments.

In this part of the Hida Valley, the festival also follows a “neighborhood matsuri” spirit, where local shops, associations, and residents are directly involved. The highlights blend local traditions with a popular program: decoration contests, stage demonstrations, group dancing, and family-friendly activities. After several years disrupted by the pandemic, the event has returned to strong attendance and continues to evolve from one edition to the next depending on the calendar and local organizing conditions.

• Location : the central area of 萩原町萩原（Hagiwara-chō Hagiwara）, around the shopping street (商店街) and the 萩原庁舎跡地駐車場（Hagiwara chōsha ato chi chūshajō） (parking lot on the former administrative office site), used as the “main venue”.

Schedule

The festival feels like a big village celebration: people come for the atmosphere, tasty stalls, Tanabata (七夕) decorations, and the sense of a “town in festival mode” throughout the streets. Depending on the year, the activity spreads across the shopping area, with a central hub at an event zone (“main venue”) where performances and announcements follow one another.

Typical highlights include mikoshi (神輿) parades and appearances (children, youth, groups), stage performances (music, dance, demonstrations), a large group dance (盆踊り, bon odori), and contests/activities linked to summer decorations. Some editions also spotlight very local elements such as 萩原御前太鼓（Hagiwara Gozen Daiko） (taiko) or fire/pyrotechnic segments like tezutsu hanabi (手筒花火), depending on the announced program.

The best time to really “feel” the matsuri: late afternoon into early evening, when the streets fill up, lanterns and decorations take over, and the festival shifts into its most spectacular and participatory moments.

Classic “matsuri” scenes work well during mikoshi (神輿) passages and during bon odori (盆踊り). If you want to avoid heads everywhere, arrive before the peak (before around 6:00 pm, depending on the edition) and pick a fixed angle near the main flow areas.

Weather

Early August in Gero: heat and humidity are possible, with a risk of thunder showers late in the day. Wear something light but bring rain protection (poncho) and items to handle the heat (water, towel, fan). Comfortable shoes are essential: you’ll walk a lot and stand for long periods.

Transport

The easiest option is the train: take JR高山本線 to 飛騨萩原駅（Hida Hagiwara-eki）, then a short walk. By car, parking may be limited or reorganized on the day, so arrive early if you want to park close by.

Visitor tips

To enjoy everything without stress: start by checking out the decorations and stalls, then save the “core” program (stage, mikoshi, bon odori) for the evening. A nice extra: wearing a yukata (浴衣) matches the vibe perfectly. And a simple phrase: 楽しかったです（tanoshikatta desu） (“That was great!”) always gets a smile.

What to bring

Cash (cash payments are common), water bottle, poncho, power bank, towel, mosquito repellent, and if you stay late, a light extra layer for the end of the evening.
