About

Name in Japanese and English

  • 津和野流鏑馬神事
  • Tsuwano Horseback Archery Ritual

History

The Yabusame of Tsuwano is a sacred ritual (Shinji) with roots dating back to the Kamakura period (1185–1333). It is closely linked to the Ogasawara school (小笠原流), the historical reference for samurai etiquette and archery. This ritual is performed to pray for national peace, abundant harvests, and the health of the inhabitants.

The riding ground of the shrine, the Washibara Hachiman-gū Baba, is exceptional: it is considered the only Yabusame ground in Japan that has fully preserved its original layout and structures from the Edo period. The shrine itself was established to protect the Tsuwano feudal domain, making this demonstration of skill a true offering to the deities (Kami).

Location and Date of the Event

  • Location: Washibara Hachiman-gū Shrine (鷲原八幡宮).
  • Address: 597-イ632-2 Washibara, Tsuwano-cho, Kanoashi-gun, Shimane 699-5613 (島根県鹿足郡津和野町鷲原597イ632-2).
  • Access: About 30 minutes on foot or 10 minutes by taxi/bike from JR Tsuwano Station (Yamaguchi Line). Shuttles are sometimes arranged during the festival.
  • Date: The second Sunday of April.

Event Procedure

The ritual begins with a solemn procession of archers in medieval hunting costumes, priests, and banner bearers. After a purification ceremony within the shrine, the archers proceed to the 250-meter track.

Galloping at full speed, the riders must release the reins to draw their bows and break three successive cedar wood targets. The archers’ shout, « In-Yo-In-Yo » (representing the opposing forces of Yin and Yang), echoes as the hooves pound the ground.

The most intense moment is the arrow’s impact: when the target shatters, the audience erupts in cheers. These wood fragments are considered sacred talismans and are traditionally collected by spectators at the end of the ritual.

Practical Tips

Photography

Speed is key: use a shutter speed of at least 1/2000s. Position yourself halfway along the track to capture the archer in full extension. Flash is strictly prohibited to avoid frightening the horses. A telephoto lens is highly recommended.

Weather

April’s climate in this valley can be deceptive: cool in the shade but very hot under the direct sun on the Yabusame ground. Bring sunscreen and a light jacket that you can remove depending on exposure.

Transport

Tsuwano Station is the main entry point. To avoid the 30-minute walk, renting a bicycle near the station is the most flexible option. Note that parking near the shrine is extremely limited on the day.

Visitor Tips

Arrive at least 2 hours early to secure a spot along the safety rope at the edge of the track. Once the ritual starts, it is almost impossible to move to see the targets.

What to Bring

Bring sunglasses to protect against dust raised by the horses and cash for small local food stalls (Yatai).
