About

Name in Japanese and English

  • 牛深ハイヤ祭り
  • Ushibuka Haiya Matsuri, the great “Haiya” festival of Ushibuka (Amakusa, Kumamoto)

History

The Ushibuka Haiya Matsuri(牛深ハイヤ祭り, Ushibuka haiya matsuri)is the flagship spring event in Ushibuka(牛深, Ushibuka), in the southern part of Amakusa(天草, Amakusa) within Kumamoto Prefecture(熊本県, Kumamoto-ken). The festival honors the Haiya-bushi(ハイヤ節, haiya-bushi), a maritime song and dance rhythm considered one of the major sources of the “Ha(i)ya songs” (ハイヤ系民謡, haiya-kei min’yō) that spread throughout Japan during the Edo period (江戸時代, Edo jidai). In Ushibuka, a natural harbor (良港, ryōkō), tradition says that people sang and danced to welcome sailors on stopover, in the atmosphere of port banquets.

In modern times, the festival has been structured as a citizen festival (市民総参加, shimin sōsanka) where the entire city becomes a stage: main street, squares, bridge, port. Its most famous image is the Haiya sōodori(ハイヤ総踊り, haiya sōodori) : thousands of dancers in yukata (浴衣, yukata) or happi coats (法被, happi) advance in processions, carried by shamisen/taiko and songs, until the city center transforms into a “Haiya wave.” The festival also experienced adapted formats during the Covid period, with reduced (規模縮小, kibo shukushō) or local (地域限定, chiiki gentei) editions, before returning to the classic three-day schedule.

Location and Date of the Event

  • Location: Ushibuka city center(天草市牛深町中心街一帯, Amakusa-shi Ushibuka-machi chūōgai ittai), notably the shopping street area(中央商店街, chūō shōtengai) and sites around the port.
  • Address: 〒863-1901 熊本県天草市牛深町 中央商店街一帯 (Ushibuka-machi, Amakusa-shi, Kumamoto).
  • Access: road/bus arrival to Ushibuka, then on foot within the center. Practical landmark: bus stop 牛深港(うしぶかこう, Ushibuka-kō) near the port area. Parking: free parking lots announced (approximate capacity around 650 spaces), with zones and instructions specified by the organization.
  • Date: mid-April, over 3 days (Friday–Sunday), announced each year.
  • Date type: variable — traditionally around the 3rd weekend of April (前夜祭/本祭, zen’ya-sai/hon-sai), but the exact date depends on the annual calendar and organizational choices.

Schedule

The festival is experienced as a continuous “city celebration”: musical stages, stalls, port activities, and especially dance. The goal is as much to watch as to participate: the Haiya dance(ハイヤ踊り, haiya-odori) is often open to visitors (飛び入り, tobiiri) during certain time slots, depending on the edition.

Friday often serves as a warm-up with a pre-evening(前夜祭, zen’ya-sai) and a very local highlight: an opening dance on the Haiya Bridge(牛深ハイヤ大橋, Ushibuka Haiya Ōhashi). Another important event, depending on the year, is the indoor evening “Kagayake Haiya no Kyōen”(輝けハイヤの競演, kagayake haiya no kyōen), organized in a hall, with a “gala/contest” atmosphere.

Saturday and Sunday build up with the Haiya sōodori(ハイヤ総踊り, haiya sōodori) in the shopping streets (道中踊り, dochū-odori): line groups, songs, shamisen/taiko, and a finale where the city seems to dance as one. In parallel, there is often a seafood fair(水産フェア, suisan fea) and invited performances (郷土芸能, kyōdo geinō), giving the matsuri its “Amakusa, port and conviviality” character.

Practical Tips

Photos

Signature images are taken at two spots: the bridge(牛深ハイヤ大橋, Ushibuka Haiya Ōhashi) for deep dance lines, and the shopping street(中央商店街, chūō shōtengai) for the density of processions. For the night, aim for moments of total sōodori (総踊り, sōodori): a 35–85 mm lens is perfect to alternate scenes and portraits. Watch out for banners, wires, and signs: find a “clean” axis early and keep some height if possible.

Weather

Mid-April in Ushibuka is often pleasant, but the port brings wind (風, kaze) and a cool feeling in the evening. Bring a light layer + windbreaker, and comfortable shoes: you will walk and stand for a long time.

Transport

The area is designed to be explored on foot once there. If you come by car, aim to arrive early to take advantage of the announced parking and avoid congestion. By bus, note the Ushibuka-kō(牛深港, Ushibuka-kō) stop as a drop-off point near the port, then walk to the central area.

Visitor Tips

To experience the “real” festival: do bridge (opening) + shopping street (sōodori). If you want to participate, first observe the gestures, then join a zone marked “飛び入りOK” (tobiiri OK) when it exists. Useful phrase: 「一緒に踊っていいですか?」 (issho ni odotte ii desu ka?, “May I dance with you?”).

What to Bring

Cash (現金, genkin) for stalls, portable charger, windbreaker, small towel (タオル, taoru), and a rain cover just in case. If you plan to photograph at night, a small flashlight and a bright lens make a difference.
