Bunkyō Ume Matsuri at Yushima Tenmangū (Bunkyō Plum Festival at Yushima Tenjin)
History
The Bunkyō Ume Matsuri 文京梅まつり (Bunkyō Ume Matsuri, "Bunkyō Plum Festival") is a plum blossom festival held within the grounds of the Yushima Tenmangū 湯島天満宮 (Yushima Tenmangū), better known as Yushima Tenjin 湯島天神 (Yushima Tenjin), in the Bunkyō ward 文京区 (Bunkyō-ku), northeast of Tōkyō. It is one of the "five major flower festivals of Bunkyō 文京花の五大まつり (Bunkyō hana no godai matsuri)", alongside the cherry blossom, azalea, hydrangea, and chrysanthemum festivals.
Yushima Tenmangū is an ancient shrine whose origin, according to tradition, dates back to the year 458 under Emperor Yūryaku Tennō 雄略天皇 (Yūryaku Tennō). Later, in 1355 (Bunna era 文和), the locals brought the spirit of Sugawara no Michizane 菅原道真 (Sugawara no Michizane), a great scholar and statesman of the Heian period 平安時代 (Heian jidai), to establish a Tenman-gū 天満宮 (Tenmangū) shrine dedicated to the "god of studies" 学問の神様 (gakumon no kamisama). Under the Tokugawa shogunate, the shrine was protected and became a cultural center: scholars and writers from Edo came to admire the plum trees and compose poems.
The connection between Yushima Tenjin and the plum trees notably comes from Michizane’s famous poem, written during his exile in Dazaifu 太宰府 (Dazaifu), addressed to his favorite plum tree: “東風吹かば 匂いおこせよ 梅の花 あるじなしとて 春な忘れそ” (Kochi fukaba nioi okoseyo ume no hana / aruji nashi tote haru na wasureso) – "East wind, when you blow, bring your fragrance, plum blossoms; do not forget spring, even though your master is gone." This image of the faithful and learned plum tree helped make Yushima a very popular "plum blossom viewing spot 梅の名所 (ume no meisho)" since the Edo period.
The Bunkyō Ume Matsuri, as an organized event, began in the 1950s. Official information indicates that the festival has been held at Yushima Tenmangū since Shōwa 31 昭和31年度 (1956–1957), then relaunched and structured from 1958 (Shōwa 33). In 2025, the 68th edition 第68回 (dai 68-kai) will be celebrated, and the 2026 edition is announced as the 69th 第69回 (dai 69-kai).
The plum garden at Yushima Tenjin has about 300 plum trees 梅の木約300本 (ume no ki yaku 300-bon), spread across about twenty varieties: mainly the Shirokaga 白加賀 (shirokaga, white plum), but also Tsukikage 月影 (tsukikage), Kankōbai 寒紅梅 (kankōbai), and other cultivars, allowing the blossoms to bloom from February to early March.
Since 1956, the festival has continuously grown, now attracting up to 400,000 visitors in some years. During the Bunkyō Ume Matsuri period, weekends and holidays feature many events: outdoor tea ceremonies 野点 (nodate), taiko drum 太鼓 (taiko) concerts including the Shiraume Daiko 白梅太鼓, regional product exhibitions 物産展 (bussan-ten), karaoke contests, performances, and association booths.
Recently, the city of Bunkyō launched a "plum garden regeneration project" 梅園再生プロジェクト (Umezono saisei project) (starting in 2023), to replant some trees, redevelop the area around Yushima’s iconic plum tree, and offer a new promenade space. The completion of these works and their official inauguration took place in 2025, on the occasion of the 68th edition.
In the evening, the illumination of the plum trees, called "Yakan-ume / Yajingbai 夜神梅", creates a very different atmosphere from the daytime, where the silhouettes of the trees stand out against the Tōkyō sky. The Bunkyō Ume Matsuri has thus become one of the major late-winter events, combining 観梅 kanbai (kanbai, plum blossom viewing), prayers for academic success 合格祈願 (gōkaku kigan), and an urban festival atmosphere.
Event Location & Date
Main Location
Sanctuary Yushima Tenmangū 湯島天満宮 (Yushima Tenmangū), also called Yushima Tenjin 湯島天神 (Yushima Tenjin).
Dates
The Bunkyō Ume Matsuri is held every year from early February to early March, over a period of about one month. In recent years, the dates have been very stable:
- From February 8 to March 8 (2/8 → 3/8), with the shrine open for the festival from 8:00 AM to 7:30 PM, every day, free admission.
- The optimal plum blossom period is generally between mid-February and early March, but varies depending on the year's weather conditions.
Event Schedule
The detailed program varies each year, but the framework of the Bunkyō Ume Matsuri is well established.
1. Plum Viewing within the Shrine Grounds
From the entrance of Yushima Tenjin, banners and lanterns announce the Bunkyō Ume Matsuri. The courtyard and garden host about 300 plum trees, mainly white-flowered varieties such as Shirokaga 白加賀, but also pink or bright red cultivars. The trees, some aged 70 to 80 years, create a dense landscape around the main pavilion and pathways.
Visitors can freely stroll among the clusters, photograph the blossoms, inhale the sweet scent of the plums, and enjoy seasonal installations: poetic panels, decorations, ema 絵馬 (ema, votive plaques) themed around studies and exam success, etc.
2. Prayers for Studies and Exams
Since Yushima Tenmangū is dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane, the shrine receives during the festival an impressive number of exam candidates 受験生 (juken-sei) and families. The ema boards 絵馬掛け (ema-kake) become covered with small wishes for success in competitions, entrance exams, and studies in general.
Many visitors purchase a omamori 合格御守 (gōkaku omamori, success amulet) or talismans related to studies, then come to pray at the main pavilion before strolling through the plum garden. The spiritual and academic dimension of the place is therefore very strong throughout the festival.
3. Weekend and Holiday Activities
The weekends and holidays concentrate most of the activities:
- 野点 nodate (nodate): outdoor tea ceremonies held on certain Sundays or holidays, allowing visitors to enjoy matcha and wagashi under the blooming plum trees.
- 演芸 engei (performances): drum performances by 白梅太鼓 (Shiraume Daiko), music, dance, and sometimes demonstrations of traditional arts.
- 物産展 bussan-ten: booths featuring regional products (for example specialties from Noto 能登町 or Kanazawa 金沢市), offering delicacies, crafts, and seasonal souvenirs.
- Karaoke contests and other occasional activities (workshops, cultural presentations, family workshops) depending on the edition.
Some years, collaborations take place with art schools or local groups, offering drawing exhibitions, charity booths, or activities for children.
4. Night Illuminations – Yajingbai / Yakan-ume 夜神梅
At nightfall, the grounds are partially illuminated: the trees are lit from below, creating a strong contrast between the white petals and the winter sky. The city of Bunkyō refers to this setup as “Yajingbai / Yakan-ume 夜神梅”. Visitors can thus enjoy the plum trees until about 7:30 pm – 8:00 pm, in a much calmer atmosphere than in the afternoon.
5. Attendance and Atmosphere
Even on weekdays, the site is very busy, especially with students and workers from the Ueno–Ochanomizu area. On weekends, the crowd noticeably increases, especially on days with activities. The total number of visitors over the entire period is estimated at several hundred thousand (over 400,000 in some years).
Practical Tips
Photos
- For an iconic view, aim for the axis between the haiden 拝殿 (haiden, prayer hall) and the plum garden: by positioning yourself slightly to the side, you can frame both the shrine architecture and a sea of white flowers simultaneously.
- The details are very photogenic: close-up plum branches with the bokeh of lanterns, ema covered with exam wishes, or the contrast between the Tokyo rooftops in the distance and the silhouettes of the trees.
- In the evening, bring a lightweight tripod or a camera that handles high ISO well: the lighting on the plum trees is quite soft, ideal for long exposures and somewhat dreamy atmospheres.
Weather & Comfort
- Between early February and early March, Tokyo remains cool (often 3–12 °C). Bring a coat, scarf, and possibly gloves, especially in the early morning or late evening.
- The ground is mostly paved or gravel. Comfortable closed shoes are recommended, especially if you plan to stand for a long time photographing or waiting in line at the stalls.
- In case of rain, there may be mud in some areas near the plum tree clusters. A compact umbrella and shoes that can handle some moisture are practical.

Visitor Tip
- To avoid the peak crowds, favor weekday mornings: you will enjoy the relative calm of the shrine, with the plum trees often bathed in beautiful low-angle light.
- If you want to experience both the bloom and the events, check the calendar for weekends with nodate and concerts: some Sundays combine outdoor tea ceremonies, taiko drumming, and regional stalls, offering a very complete experience.
- Remember to check the plum blossom status 梅の開花状況 (ume no kaika jōkyō) on the official Yushima Tenjin website before you go: full bloom lasts only about one to two weeks.
What to Bring
- Warm mid-season clothing (coat, scarf), especially in the evening during the illuminations.
