- Hokumon Shrine
Overview
Hokumon Jinja (北門神社) is a Shintō shrine (神社, jinja) in Wakkanai (稚内市), northern Hokkaidō (北海道). It is often introduced as the northernmost shrine in Japan with a resident priest (神職常駐, shinshoku jōchū), and it remains an important local place of prayer for protection, safety, and prosperity.
Religious profile
- Type : Shintō shrine (神社, jinja).
- Enshrined deities (祭神, saijin) :
- Annual festival date (例祭日, reisaibi) : July 5 (7月5日).
- Shrine rank (former) : gōsha (郷社).
- Main hall style : shinmei-zukuri (神明造).
History
Tradition traces the shrine’s origins to 1785 (Tenmei 5, 天明5年), when a small shrine was established in the Sōya (宗谷) area, notably connected to prayers for safe sea travel (航海安全, kōkai anzen) and abundant catches (大漁, tairyō). Later, in 1896 (Meiji 29, 明治29年), the shrine was moved to its current location and took the name Hokumon Jinja, with additional deities enshrined.
A major fire in 1911 (Meiji 44, 明治44年) destroyed the buildings, followed by rebuilding and further improvements through the 20th century. Today, the shrine remains a spiritual and cultural landmark of Wakkanai.

Practical tips
Photos
For a signature shot, capture the torii (鳥居) or the shrine façade under a wide open sky. In winter, snow creates strong contrast—protect your camera from the wind.
Weather
Wakkanai is often windy: even in mild temperatures, it can feel cold. A windbreaker is useful year-round; in cold seasons, bring gloves and a beanie.
Transport
Walking from the station involves a gentle uphill stretch that can feel tougher in strong wind. By car, the parking lot is small—go earlier in the day or outside peak times.
Visitor tip
A good short route: Hokumon Jinja → Tanka Path (短歌の道) → Wakkanai Park (稚内公園), especially on clear days for the viewpoints.
What to bring
Small change (賽銭, saisen), a windbreaker, a power bank, and in winter, non-slip shoes.
