About

Name in Japanese and English

  • 夏越し大祭 つきじ獅子祭(波除稲荷神社)
  • Tsukiji Shishi Matsuri (Tsukiji Lion Festival / Namiyoke Inari Grand Summer Festival)

History

The Tsukiji Shishi Matsuri is the primary summer festival of Namiyoke Inari Shrine in Tsukiji. The shrine's name, "Namiyoke" (protection against waves), stems from an Edo-period legend where the deity helped calm the sea during land reclamation. To celebrate, locals began parading massive heads of shishi (lions), ryū (dragons), and tora (tigers) to demonstrate the deity's power over nature.

Historical records like the Tōto Saijiki confirm that parading these giant lion heads (shishi-gashira) like mikoshi was a hallmark of Edo festivities. While many original artifacts were lost in the 1923 Great Kantō Earthquake, the late 20th century saw a vibrant revival. This included the reconstruction of the massive male lion, Tenjō Ōjishi, and the female Ohaguro Shishi (associated with the deity Benzaiten), known for her blackened teeth—a mark of beauty for married women in old Japan.

The festival operates on a cycle, alternating between Honmatsuri (full-scale grand years) and Inmatsuri (off-years). In Honmatsuri years, the main Senkan-miya Mikoshi makes a grand appearance alongside the monumental lion heads, creating one of Tokyo's most visually striking processions.

Event Schedule

As a natsumatsuri (summer festival), the event focuses on natsugoshi—a mid-year purification ritual to wash away the sins of the first half of the year and pray for health during the hot summer months.

The festival typically begins with the Chinka-sai (flower-calming ritual) and Yoi-miya-sai (eve-festival). The energy peaks during the Togyo-sai (procession day). During this time, the Senkan-miya Mikoshi and the giant Tenjō Ōjishi or Ohaguro Shishi are carried through the narrow, bustling streets of the Tsukiji market district.

The sight of the massive lion heads "dancing" through the crowds to the rhythm of festival-bayashi music is the festival's most famous image. The Ohaguro Shishi is unique because it is often carried exclusively by women during certain segments of the parade, a rare and celebrated sight in traditional Tokyo festivals.

Practical Advice

Photography

The miyadashi (departure from the shrine) and miyairi (return to the shrine) offer the most intense emotions and "compressed" shots of the crowd. Use a wide-angle lens to capture the lion heads set against the unique backdrop of Tsukiji’s seafood shops and stalls.

Weather

June is the start of the tsuyu (rainy season). Expect high humidity and potential rain. A lightweight poncho is highly recommended over an umbrella, as the narrow streets of Tsukiji become very congested, making umbrellas difficult to manage.

Transport

Use the Hibiya or Oedo subway lines. Avoid the area by car, as many streets around the market are closed or restricted for the procession. Arrive at least 30 minutes before the scheduled start of the Togyo-sai to find a good viewing spot.

Visitor Tips

Combine your visit with a trip to the Tsukiji Outer Market for breakfast or lunch. To find the best viewing spot for the parade, ask a local volunteer: 「おみこしはどこを通りますか?」 (Omikoshi wa doko o tōrimasu ka? — "Where will the mikoshi pass through?").

What to Bring

Cash for the numerous yatai (food stalls), a power bank, cooling wipes or a small towel for the humidity, and mosquito repellent if you plan to stay near the shrine's greenery for long.
