About
Name in Japanese and English
- 長浜曳山祭(ながはまひきやままつり)
- Nagahama Hikiyama Matsuri, the festival of pulled floats of Nagahama
History
The Nagahama Hikiyama Matsuri(長浜曳山祭, nagahama hikiyama matsuri)is the grand festival of the Nagahama Hachimangū Shrine(長浜八幡宮, Nagahama Hachimangū)in Nagahama(長浜市, Nagahama-shi), Shiga Prefecture(滋賀県, Shiga-ken). It takes place every year over a long ritual period, with a concentration of spectacular events in the middle of the sequence.
The most famous feature is the kodomo kabuki(子ども歌舞伎, kodomo kabuki, “children’s kabuki”), also called kodomo kyōgen(子ども狂言, kodomo kyōgen)in the context of the festival. Young actors (usually boys, around 5 to 12 years old) perform on the stage of the floats, the hikiyama(曳山, hikiyama, “pulled floats”), sometimes described as a “mobile art gallery” (動く美術館, ugoku bijutsukan) because of the rich decorations (彫刻, chōkoku, “sculptures”; 飾金具, kazari kanagu, “metal ornaments”; 幕, maku, “draperies”).
From a heritage perspective, the festival is presented as a major element of the local intangible heritage and belongs to the family of major yama・hoko・yatai matsuri(山・鉾・屋台行事, yama-hoko-yatai gyōji). In practice, the schedule remains very stable (fixed dates), but the organization (運営, unei) can adapt certain points (exact times, traffic, instructions) depending on the edition.
Location and Date of the Event
- Location: downtown Nagahama(長浜市街地, Nagahama shigaichi)and 長浜八幡宮(ながはまはちまんぐう, Nagahama Hachimangū).
- Address (shrine): 〒526-0053 Shiga Prefecture, Nagahama City, Miyamae-cho 13-55
- Date: fixed — from April 9 to 17 every year.
- Most “visual” period: often from April 13 to 16 (days with the most performances and parades).
- 2026: from April 9 to 17, 2026 (Thursday 9 → Friday 17). Usual highlight days: April 13–16, 2026 (Monday → Thursday), to be confirmed at the time of detailed program publication.
- Access: JR 長浜駅(ながはまえき, Nagahama-eki)then about 10–15 minutes on foot to the shrine area and the float neighborhoods.
Schedule
The festival spans several days, with a gradual build-up. The first days (4/9–4/12) correspond to opening rites and traditional practices (e.g., sequences of devotion and preparation), followed by the days when the public most clearly sees the soul of the matsuri: the kodomo kabuki(子ども歌舞伎, kodomo kabuki)on the floats and the movements through the city.
The “core” part generally includes: yoimiya(宵宮, yoimiya, “eve of the festival”) with a nighttime atmosphere, then days of junkō(巡行, junkō, “itinerant parade”) where the floats appear in the streets, and finally ritual moments related to the shrine (神事, shinji). On certain days, the child actors walk in costume during very popular “passing” sequences, punctuated by poses (見得, mie) when the crowd applauds.
On site, the best approach is to locate the yamazō(山蔵, yamazō, “float warehouses/garages”) of the participating neighborhoods: part of the performances take place near these points, then the dynamic changes when the floats gather and move.
Practical Tips
Photos
For the kodomo kabuki(子ども歌舞伎, kodomo kabuki), aim for a short zoom: faces, makeup (隈取, kumadori) and costume details come out very well. For the “city + floats” atmosphere, position yourself at an intersection (辻, tsuji) or a corner (曲がり角, magari-kado): the pulling teams (曳き手, hikite) and the music stand out better.
Weather
Mid-April in Shiga: variable (rain/wind possible). Take a poncho (レインポンチョ, rein poncho) rather than an umbrella if you follow the narrow streets, and a light layer for the evening.
Transport
The center is walkable from Nagahama-eki(長浜駅, Nagahama-eki). On the busiest days, favor the train and arrive early. Some areas may be regulated (交通規制, kōtsū kisei) and nearby parking fills up quickly.
