Name
- Sarutahiko no Ōkami (猿田彦大神)
Identity
Sarutahiko no Ōkami is a Shintō kami associated with passages, roads, and crossroads. He is often described as an “earthly deity” (kunitsukami, 国津神) with a powerful presence, linked to guiding and securing movement from one point to another— whether a physical journey or an important turning point in life.
Mythological role
His central role is that of michi-biraki (道開き, “opening the way” or “guiding the path”). Sarutahiko intervenes when a passage must be made possible, when a transition between worlds or stages needs to occur smoothly. For this reason, he is invoked for guidance, protection during travel, and the success of new beginnings.
Famous myth
The best-known episode involving Sarutahiko takes place during the
tenson kōrin
(天孫降臨, “descent of the heavenly grandchild”).
Sarutahiko appears to meet Ninigi no Mikoto
and guides him so that his arrival in the earthly world proceeds correctly.
In some traditions, Ame-no-Uzume no Mikoto
plays a key role in this encounter,
highlighting a balance between the force that opens the path
and the energy that sets things into motion.
Worship
Sarutahiko is venerated at dedicated shrines (Sarutahiko-jinja, 猿田彦神社), and more broadly in contexts where people pray for:
protection during journeys and travel,
road safety and secure transportation,
the successful start of a new project,
removing obstacles or “unlocking” a difficult situation.
In everyday practice, he is commonly invoked before major life changes (a new job, relocation, or launching a business), or when one seeks a clear direction forward.
Symbolism
Sarutahiko embodies the crossroads in a profound sense: the moment of choosing a direction, crossing a boundary, or moving from one stage of life to another. He represents the idea that a path can be opened, secured, and made clear. His striking representations (often with a red face, strong features, and a long nose) emphasize not strangeness, but rather power and presence, capable of removing obstacles and guarding the passage.
