Summary
The 仙台クラシックフェスティバル (Sendai Kurashikku Fesutibaru), or Sendai Classical Festival, is a classical music festival held every autumn in Sendai. Nicknamed せんくら (Senkura), it offers many short, accessible concerts over three days, spread across several venues in the city. Its goal is simple: to allow everyone, from seasoned music lovers to families with children, to discover classical music in a freer, more affordable, and less intimidating format than a traditional concert.
Access and landmarks
Location
Several venues in Sendai, mainly located along the Nanboku subway line. Major venues include 日立システムズホール仙台 (Hitachi Systems Hall Sendai), 仙台銀行ホール イズミティ21 (Sendai Bank Hall Izumity 21), and the 太白区文化センター (Taihaku-ku Bunka Sentā), Cultural Center of Taihaku Ward.
Main address
〒981-0904 宮城県仙台市青葉区旭ケ丘3丁目27-5, Hitachi Systems Hall Sendai, Aoba-ku, Sendai-shi, Miyagi-ken.
Landmark
The main landmark is 旭ヶ丘駅 (Asahigaoka-eki), station on the Nanboku subway line in Sendai. Other concerts take place near 泉中央駅 (Izumi-chūō-eki) and 長町駅 (Nagamachi-eki), allowing easy travel between venues.
Access
From Sendai Station, take the Nanboku subway line. Hitachi Systems Hall Sendai is directly accessible from Asahigaoka Station. Izumity 21 is near Izumi-chūō Station, while the Taihaku Ward Cultural Center is close to Nagamachi. Since the festival is designed around the subway, purchasing a day pass can be convenient if attending multiple concerts at different venues.
Event program
The festival takes place over three consecutive days, usually at the beginning of October. The program includes many short concerts, often about 45 to 60 minutes long, allowing the audience to attend several sessions in one day. This format is one of Senkura’s great strengths: it makes classical music easier to discover without the long and formal commitment of a traditional symphony concert.
The concerts cover a wide range of formats: piano recitals, chamber music, singing, string instruments, winds, ensembles, narrated concerts, and themed programs. The festival features nationally and internationally renowned artists, performers connected to Tōhoku, and musicians involved in Sendai’s musical life.
Special attention is given to families and children. Some concerts are open to babies from 0 years old, with programs designed for very young listeners. Other sessions offer more playful or participatory presentations to help children and visitors unfamiliar with classical music enter the world of the works.
Alongside paid concerts in halls, the festival may also offer free or accessible events in public spaces, such as city concerts, musical activities, or performances in transit areas. This urban dimension transforms Sendai into a true musical journey for three days.
Practical tips
Photos
Photos, videos, and recordings are generally prohibited during concerts in halls. It is preferable to photograph only posters, lobbies, exterior decorations, or events explicitly open to photography. Check the rules of each venue before the concert.
Weather
Early October in Sendai brings autumnal temperatures, often mild during the day and cooler in the evening. Dress in layers, as travel between venues alternates with long periods seated indoors. A compact umbrella may be useful in case of autumn rain.
Transport
The subway is the most convenient mode of transport. The main venues are located near Asahigaoka, Izumi-chūō, or Nagamachi stations. For a day with multiple concerts, an IC card like Suica or PASMO, or a Sendai subway day pass, saves time.
Visitor tips
Tickets are sold per individual concert. The most popular artists and family concerts can sell out quickly after ticket sales open. Arriving at least 15 minutes before the start is recommended, as concerts are short and being late means missing a significant part of the program.
What to bring
Printed or digital tickets, IC card, festival program, quiet clothing, compact bag, external battery, and possibly a small drink for breaks between concerts. In the hall, remember to completely turn off your phone before the performance begins.
History
The Sendai Classical Festival was created in 2006 at the initiative of the city of Sendai. It was born from a desire to democratize classical music by offering many short concerts at accessible prices. The nickname せんくら (Senkura) quickly became familiar to residents, naturally designating the festival in local cultural life.
The festival is part of Sendai’s identity as 楽都 (gakuto), "city of music." The city notably hosts the 仙台フィルハーモニー管弦楽団 (Sendai Firuhāmonī Kangengakudan), Sendai Philharmonic Orchestra, and the 仙台国際音楽コンクール (Sendai Kokusai Ongaku Konkūru), Sendai International Music Competition. Senkura complements this ecosystem by opening classical music to a broader audience in a festive and urban form.
Over the editions, the festival has become an annual musical marathon. Venues near the subway allow spectators to create their own itinerary: listen to a recital in the morning, discover a chamber ensemble in the afternoon, then finish with a symphonic or vocal concert in the evening. This freedom of movement distinguishes Senkura from more centralized festivals.
The event also relies on strong civic participation. Volunteers, high school students, cultural associations, venue teams, and local actors contribute to welcoming, announcements, decoration, and the overall festival atmosphere. This participatory dimension strengthens its character as both a city music celebration and an artistic event.
