- Mikuni Matsuri (Mikuni Festival)
History
The Mikuni Matsuri(三国祭, Mikuni Matsuri)is the great spring festival of Mikuni(三国, Mikuni)in Sakai(坂井市, Sakai-shi, Fukui Prefecture/福井県, Fukui-ken), celebrated as the 例大祭(れいたいさい, reitaisai)of Mikuni Shrine(三國神社, Mikuni Jinja). Locally, it is a calendar "monument," often presented as one of the Hokuriku sandai matsuri(北陸三大祭, "the three great festivals of Hokuriku").
Its signature features are the yama(山車, dashi/yama)topped with gigantic warrior dolls(武者人形, musha ningyō), which often exceed 6 m and transform the alleys of the old port into a true mobile theater. Neighborhoods create and renew these figures (historical themes, heroes, kabuki scenes), and the art of staging (costumes, poses, colors) has become a local pride as much as a marker of identity.
The festival is also an event of "movement" and "strength": people come to see the pulling, the maneuvers, and especially the grand rotations of the floats in the streets (often described as scenes that trigger ovations and applause). Added to this is the ritual dimension: the presence of the mikoshi(神輿, mikoshi)and, depending on the year and program, the very spectacular fune mikoshi(舟神輿, fune mikoshi), a "boat mikoshi" linked to Mikuni's maritime history.

- Date: May 19, 20, and 21 (3 days).
Schedule
The Mikuni Matsuri lasts 3 days. The guiding principle is the "build-up": first the shrine rituals and a warm-up of the floats, then the main central day where mikoshi(神輿)and yama(山車)parade through the town, before the ritual closing.
May 19: day of rituals (e.g., 大祭式典/たいさいしきてん, taisai shikiten) and, in the evening, a procession called 宵山車巡行(よいやましゃじゅんこう, yoiyama-sha junkō)with a float (often that of the preservation/保存振興会, hozon shinkōkai) that "announces" the festival in the streets.
May 20 (central day): this is the most anticipated moment: 中日祭(ちゅうにちさい, chūnichi-sai). The floats depart from the neighborhoods in the morning, gather around noon in front of the shrine, then the grand 巡行(じゅんこう, junkō)begins (often announced around 1 p.m.). In the afternoon and evening, the yama are followed through Mikuni, with breaks in "showcase" areas (near shopping streets) and, above all, the rotation and maneuvering scenes that make the festival famous. Depending on the program, the 舟神輿(ふねみこし, fune mikoshi)may also be seen alongside the mikoshi.
May 21: closing with the final rituals, typically 後日祭(ごじつさい, gojitsu-sai), and a return to order: the town "calms down" after three days of intensity.
Practical Tips
Photos
The must-see is May 20: you'll have all the yama, and the maneuvers (including the rotations) provide ultra-dynamic images. For details of the warrior doll(武者人形, musha ningyō), aim for moments when they stop (gathering in front of the shrine, breaks on main arteries). If you want a "lanterns/crowd" atmosphere, stay until evening. Simple tip: keep some distance, trajectories change quickly.
Weather
Mid-May in Mikuni is often pleasant, but the seaside can be humid and a bit windy. Pack layered clothing (evenings are cooler) and light rain protection. Comfortable shoes are essential: you'll walk a lot and stand for long periods.
Transport
The most reliable way: come by train + Echizen Railway to Mikuni Jinja-eki(三国神社駅)then walk. On the main day, some streets may be regulated: avoid driving "too close." For some editions, park-and-ride + shuttle services are offered, which is convenient if you arrive by car.
Visitor Tips
To enjoy it without experiencing maximum density, keep it simple: gather in front of the shrine at noon, then move 1 or 2 streets away to follow the procession with more space. Useful phrase: 「山車はどこを通りますか?」(だしはどこをとおりますか, dashi wa doko o tōrimasu ka)= "Where do the floats pass?"
What to Bring
Cash, power bank, small towel, compact poncho, and a hands-free bag. If you stay late: a light jacket.
