Matsuri Guide

About

Name in Japanese and English

  • 富士芝桜まつり
  • Festival of shibazakura (moss phlox) at the foot of Mount Fuji

History

The Fuji Shibazakura Matsuri(富士芝桜まつり, fuji shibazakura matsuri)is a major spring flower event held at 富士本栖湖リゾート(ふじもとすこりぞーと, Fuji Motosuko Resort), in the Fuji Five Lakes area (富士五湖, fujigoko). The term 芝桜(しばざくら, shibazakura)refers to moss phlox (moss phlox) whose small flowers, seen from a distance, evoke a "carpet" of sakura on the ground.

Launched in 2008, the festival has become a "postcard" of Mount Fuji : people come for the contrast between the sometimes still snow-covered slopes and a sea of flowers. Each year, approximately 500 000 plants (約50万株, yaku gojūman kabu) cover the area, with several varieties (品種, hinshu) in shades of pink, purple, red, and white. The event regularly adjusts its opening period according to the flowering status(開花状況, kaika jōkyō), which explains the variations in dates from year to year.

Event Location and Date

    Romanization: 212 Motosu, Fujikawaguchiko-machi, Minamitsuru-gun, Yamanashi 401-0337.
  • Access: From 河口湖駅(かわぐちこえき, Kawaguchiko-eki), direct bus service like 芝桜ライナー (しばざくららいなー, shibazakura rainā)takes approximately 40 min, or a regular bus takes about 55 min. By car, from 河口湖IC(かわぐちこIC, Kawaguchiko IC)via Route 139(国道139号, kokudō 139-gō)takes approximately 25 min. Ample parking is available, but saturation is possible on weekends and during Golden Week(ゴールデンウィーク, gōruden wīku).
  • Date: Generally mid-April → late May (sometimes early June), depending on flowering (開花状況, kaika jōkyō).
  • Date Type: Variable: period defined annually, with possible adjustments depending on the progress of the flowers.

Event Overview

Here, the "matsuri" is primarily a ground-level flower viewing (hanami) : people come to stroll through the paths, enjoy the viewpoints, and seek out the perfect composition of Mount Fuji + shibazakura carpet. The organizer publishes updates on the flowering status (開花状況, kaika jōkyō)to help visitors aim for the peak bloom(見頃, migoro).

The visit is done in a "loop" fashion : photo paths, zones by colors/varieties (品種, hinshu), and panoramic spots. Depending on the edition, you'll also find gourmet areas and stalls (グルメ, gurume), and very "photo-friendly" installations. The site is often coupled with neighboring activities/spaces of the resort, making it a comfortable half-day outing.

The most spectacular moment is when Fuji is clear (no low clouds) and the shibazakura are at their peak : you truly get the "pink carpet" effect (花のじゅうたん, hana no jūtan) with an enormous natural depth of field.

Practical Tips

Photos

For Fuji, the best bet is early morning : clearer sky, less haze, and fewer crowds. Bring a wide-angle lens for "carpet + mountain" shots, and a small telephoto lens to compress planes and densify color bands. If you want to avoid heads, aim for the edges of the park and slightly elevated viewpoints.

Weather

Mid-April to late May at the foot of Fuji can be cool in the morning and mild in the afternoon, with wind. Dress in layers and bring a windproof layer. The sun can be strong when it's clear : sunscreen and sunglasses are useful, even if it's cool.

Transport

On peak days, the limiting factor is traffic (渋滞, jūtai) : if you can, avoid Golden Week (ゴールデンウィーク, gōruden wīku)and late mornings. The direct bus from Kawaguchiko is often the most stress-free choice. If driving, leave early and allow extra time for the return journey.

Visitor Tips

Before you go, check the migoro(見頃, migoro, "best viewing time") via kaika jōkyō updates (開花状況, kaika jōkyō). If your goal is "Fuji + carpet," choose a day with stable weather, and have a nearby Plan B (Lake Motosu, other Fuji Five Lakes spots) if clouds cling to the summit.

What to Bring

Comfortable shoes, water, cash (for stalls), windbreaker, cap, and a power bank. If you're taking many photos : a microfiber cloth (for dust/wind) and a bag to protect your equipment.
